What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW X3?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The X3 is available in four variants: xDrive30i, M40i, and M. The xDrive30i is the entry point, while the M40i adds more standard equipment and a stronger performance focus. If you want the best value, the xDrive30i is the trim to compare first because it gives you the core X3 experience without stepping into the higher-priced performance models.
• Powertrain: The xDrive30i uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, while the M40i adds a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder with a mild-hybrid system and 382 hp. The six-cylinder model is the one to target if you want the stronger passing power and more engaging road feel.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams, a rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, active blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear collision avoidance, park distance control with auto braking, forward-collision warning with pedestrian/cyclist detection, and active pre-collision protection systems. Parking assistance plus, active park distance control, and a 360-degree surround camera view are available, along with traffic jam assistance, back-up assistant, front cross-traffic alert, a 3D assisted view display, active lane-keep assist with lane centring, and side collision avoidance.
• Infotainment: Standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus with iDrive 7 includes a 5.1-inch colour display instrument panel and a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, plus navigation, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, satellite radio, two USB ports, over-the-air updates, and connected services. An optional Live Cockpit Professional expands both screens to 12.3 inches.
• Fuel efficiency: Canadian fuel efficiency figures for the 2022 BMW X3 M40i have not yet been published.

Which 2022 BMW X3 trim should I buy?

The 2022 BMW X3 is offered in 3 trim levels: xDrive30i, M40i, and M.

Here's the short version:

• xDrive30i: This is the trim to start with if you want the best value. It gives you the standard AWD setup, the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the standard iDrive 7 system with a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, and the core safety equipment. It is the most sensible choice if you want the X3’s comfort and technology without paying for the extra performance hardware.
• M40i: This is the one to choose if you want the strongest all-around package. It adds the 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, the mild-hybrid system, standard comfort access keyless entry, a panoramic sunroof, lumbar support, and a more performance-oriented chassis feel. It is the best fit if you want the X3 to feel noticeably quicker and more upscale.
• M: This trim is for shoppers who want the most performance-focused version of the X3 lineup. It sits above the M40i and is the most specialised choice in the range.

The safety package is strong across the lineup, with parking assistance and advanced driver-assistance features available depending on trim and package selection.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 BMW X3?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you know what you want.

• Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 267 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.87% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $34,005 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 BMW X3's resale value?

The current average of $34,369 CAD sits slightly below last year's $39,906 CAD.

That price decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the X3 more attractive to used buyers today. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than on broad market momentum alone. Well-equipped examples with the right trim and a clean history should hold up better than plain-spec vehicles.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

You can also add parking assistance plus, active park distance control, and a 360-degree surround camera view. Optional features include traffic jam assistance, back-up assistant, front cross-traffic alert, a 3D assisted view display, active lane-keep assist with lane centring, and side collision avoidance.

Should I buy a 2022 BMW X3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.87% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 update brings a substantial refresh with new engines, more technology, and an expanded safety suite.

The bottom line: If you want the most up-to-date version of this generation’s X3, the 2022 is the one to target because it adds meaningful improvements without abandoning the model’s core strengths. If you are more price-sensitive, a nearby year may still make sense, but the 2022’s refreshed equipment and softer pricing make it the cleaner buy for many shoppers.
