What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW X3?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 2022 BMW X3 is available in four variants: xDrive30i, M40i, and M. The xDrive30i is the entry point, while the M40i adds more standard equipment and a more powerful character. The base model can be optioned with premium features, but some of those items are standard on the M40i, so you should compare equipment carefully before you buy.
• Powertrain: The xDrive30i uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The M40i adds a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with a mild-hybrid system, producing 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The base model is described as quick enough for everyday use, while the M40i brings noticeably stronger acceleration.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams, a rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, active blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear collision avoidance, park distance control with auto braking, forward-collision warning with pedestrian/cyclist detection, and active pre-collision protection systems. Parking assistance plus, active park distance control, and a 360-degree surround camera view are available, along with optional traffic jam assistance, back-up assistant, front cross-traffic alert, a 3D assisted view display, active lane-keep assist with lane centring, and side collision avoidance.
• Infotainment: BMW Live Cockpit Plus with iDrive 7 is standard and includes a 5.1-inch colour display instrument panel and a 10.25-inch infotainment screen. You also get navigation, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, satellite radio, two USB ports, over-the-air updates, real-time traffic, roadside assistance, and emergency services. An optional Live Cockpit Professional increases both screens to 12.3 inches and adds cloud-based navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: Canadian fuel-efficiency figures for the M40i have not yet been published.

Which 2022 BMW X3 trim should I buy?

The 2022 BMW X3 is offered in 3 trim levels: xDrive30i, M40i, and M.

Here's the short version:

• xDrive30i: This is the best-value choice if you want the core X3 experience at the lowest entry price. It gives you the standard turbocharged four-cylinder, the full suite of core infotainment and safety tech, and the polished ride and quiet cabin that define the model. If you want a well-equipped luxury compact SUV without stretching into the pricier performance trims, this is the one to start with.
• M40i: This is the trim to choose if you want the strongest all-around package. It adds the punchier six-cylinder mild-hybrid powertrain, more standard convenience features, a panoramic moonroof, and a more performance-focused feel. It is the best fit if you want the X3 to feel more special every day and are willing to pay for it.
• M: This trim is for buyers who want the most performance-oriented version of the X3 lineup. It sits above the M40i and is the most aggressive choice in the range, so it makes sense if driving character matters more to you than value.

The safety package is strong across the range, but you should still compare standard equipment carefully because some advanced driver-assistance and convenience features are reserved for higher trims or packages.

• Deal availability: 35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 253 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.58% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $34,039 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 BMW X3's resale value?

The current average of $34,039 CAD sits slightly below last year's $39,851 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, which can put some pressure on future resale if you plan to sell soon. If you buy at today's average or below, you may have less downside risk than someone who purchased when prices were higher. The X3’s premium positioning and broad appeal should still help it remain desirable, especially if it is well equipped and properly maintained.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.92/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Optional features include traffic jam assistance, back-up assistant, front cross-traffic alert, a 3D assisted view display, active lane-keep assist with lane centring, and side collision avoidance.

Should I buy a 2022 BMW X3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.58% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.92/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 brings a substantial mid-cycle refresh with design tweaks, new engines, more technology, and an expanded suite of safety features.

The bottom line: If you want the most up-to-date version of this generation, the 2022 is the smart pick because it adds meaningful updates without losing the X3’s core strengths. If your priority is stretching your budget further, a nearby model year may still make sense, but the 2022 is the better choice when you want the refreshed design, added tech, and stronger safety content in one package.
