Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series a good car?

Drivers consistently praise its sporty performance, great handling, stylish design, fuel efficiency, and quick acceleration. Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series reliable?

BMW’s first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house, which helps soften early ownership costs.

That said, some used buyers should keep an eye out for oil leak concerns and higher maintenance costs, since those can affect long-term ownership risk.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes the 330i, 330e, M340i, M3, and M3 Competition. The base versions are more restrained, while the M340i adds a more aggressive exterior treatment, 19-inch wheels, and a sportier stance that clearly separates it from the lower trims.
• Powertrain: The 330i and 330e use a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the M340i gets a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. The M340i is the performance standout, with 382 horsepower and quick, precise response.
• Safety package: Active Guard includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Traffic Jam Assistant, with adaptive cruise control and lane-centring assist, is available, and some safety features are not standard on every used example.
• Infotainment: Digital Cockpit Professional brings a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and a 10.25-inch touchscreen. Every 3 Series has Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, and BMW’s iDrive 7.0 system, while Connected Package Pro adds BMW Remote Services and Intelligent Personal Assistant.
• Fuel efficiency: The M340i returned 9.4 L/100 km on evaluation, versus an official combined rating of 9.2 L/100 km.

Which 2022 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?

The 2022 BMW 3 Series is offered in 5 trim levels: 330i, 330e, M340i, M3, and M3 Competition.

Here's the short version:

• 330i: This is the entry point if you want the 3 Series experience without moving into the pricier performance trims. It should suit you if you value the core BMW formula and want to keep costs lower.
• 330e: Choose this if you want the plug-in hybrid version and the efficiency benefits that come with it. It also qualifies for incentives, which can improve its value proposition.
• M340i: This is the best-value pick for most shoppers who want the strongest mix of performance, equipment, and everyday usability. It adds the turbocharged inline-six, M Performance styling, and a more athletic chassis tune.
• M3: Pick this if you want the high-performance version and are willing to pay for the most serious track-focused character in the lineup.
• M3 Competition: This is the top performance choice if you want the most extreme version of the standard gas lineup.

Only models equipped with the optional adaptive LED headlights with Laserlight qualify for the Top Safety Pick rating.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 153 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 18.78% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $33,756 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 BMW 3 Series's resale value?

The current average of $33,756 CAD sits slightly below last year's $41,561 CAD.

That softer pricing can be good news if you’re buying now, but it also means a future seller may face more competition from similarly priced used examples. If prices stabilise, today’s lower entry point could help support demand from shoppers looking for a premium sports sedan without paying new-car money.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series safe?

The 2022 BMW 3 Series earns a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it also earns five-star ratings across the board from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), including for rollover resistance.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

BMW’s standard safety package includes Active Guard, which brings forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Traffic Jam Assistant is available with adaptive cruise control and lane-centring assist, and Emergency Stop Assistant can bring the car to a safe stop if it detects an unresponsive driver.

One caveat is that the Top Safety Pick result depends on the optional adaptive LED headlights with Laserlight, so not every used example qualifies.

Should I buy a 2022 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 18.78% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It keeps the 3 Series formula focused on refinement rather than reinvention.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $39,856 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $33,756 CAD average.
• It adds a refreshed look and updated interior technology.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2022 is the smarter buy because it delivers the core 3 Series experience at a lower average price. If you’re willing to spend more for a fresher design and updated tech, the 2023 is the better fit.
