What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes the 330i, 330e, M340i, M3, and M3 Competition. The M340i stands out for its M Performance exterior treatment, 19-inch wheels, Shadowline trim, and blue brake calipers, while the base 330i and 330e are more restrained. If you want the best-value blend of performance and everyday usability, the M340i is the one to focus on.
• Powertrain: The 330i and 330e use a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the M340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. The M340i is the performance benchmark here, with strong acceleration and a very polished automatic transmission.
• Safety package: Active Guard includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Traffic Jam Assistant adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-centring assist, while Emergency Stop Assistant can bring the car to a safe stop if the driver is unresponsive. Some of these features are not standard on every version.
• Infotainment: Available Digital Cockpit Professional brings a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 10.25-inch touchscreen. Every 3 Series has Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, and a 10-speaker HiFi sound system, while BMW iDrive 7.0 is designed to be easy to use.
• Fuel efficiency: The M340i returned 9.4 L/100 km on the evaluation route, versus an official combined rating of 9.2 L/100 km.

Which 2022 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?

The 2022 BMW 3 Series is offered in 5 trim levels: 330i, 330e, M340i, M3, and M3 Competition.

Here's the short version:

• 330i: This is the entry point if you want the 3 Series experience without stepping into the higher-performance models. It gives you the core luxury-sedan formula and is the most straightforward choice if you value a lower purchase price over extra power.
• 330e: This plug-in hybrid is the efficiency-focused option, and it stands out because it can qualify for incentives. It suits you best if you want the 3 Series nameplate with a more economical daily-driving angle.
• M340i: This is the best-value pick for most shoppers because it adds the strongest balance of performance, equipment, and everyday usability. It brings the turbocharged inline-six, M Performance styling, and the most compelling enthusiast character without going all the way to M3 territory.
• M3: Choose this if you want the most serious performance focus in the lineup. It is the high-performance benchmark and is aimed at buyers who care more about outright capability than comfort or value.
• M3 Competition: This is the most extreme version in the range and is for you if you want the top performance trim and are willing to pay for it.

The safety package is centred on Active Guard, with more advanced driver-assistance features available on higher-spec versions.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 26.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 153 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 19.71% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $33,189 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 BMW 3 Series's resale value?

The current average of $33,196 CAD sits slightly below last year's $41,346 CAD.

That drop suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may face more price sensitivity than owners did a year ago. If you buy now at a lower entry point, you may have less downside risk than someone who purchased when prices were higher. The current range also gives you a clearer benchmark for judging whether a used listing is priced aggressively or not.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series safe?

The 2022 3 Series earns a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it also earns five-star ratings across the board from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), including for rollover resistance.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Active Guard is the standard safety package, and it includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Available Traffic Jam Assistant adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-centring assist, while Emergency Stop Assistant can bring the car to a safe stop and place an SOS call if the driver is unresponsive.

One important caveat is that the IIHS award only applies to models equipped with the optional adaptive LED headlights with Laserlight, so you should confirm the lighting equipment on any used example you are considering.

Should I buy a 2022 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 26.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 19.71% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 keeps the familiar, evolutionary 3 Series formula with only minor equipment changes.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $39,341 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $33,196 CAD average.
• It adds a mid-cycle refresh with sportier styling, an updated cockpit, and more technology.

The 2022 is the better path if you want the lower entry price and a proven formula. If you are willing to spend more for a fresher cabin and updated styling, the 2023 is the stronger alternative.

How does the 2022 BMW 3 Series compare to the 2022 Audi A4?
