What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes the 330i, 330e, M340i, M3, and M3 Competition. The 330i and 330e are the more accessible choices, while the M340i adds a stronger performance focus with M Performance exterior treatment, 19-inch wheels, and a more athletic stance. The M3 and M3 Competition sit at the top for buyers who want the most extreme performance.
• Powertrain: The 330i xDrive sedan and 330e use a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the 330e adds plug-in hybrid technology with 32 kilometres of estimated electric driving range. The M340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, and BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive is standard on this and every 3 Series except the M3 and the plug-in hybrid.
• Safety package: Active Guard includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Traffic Jam Assistant adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-centring assist, while Emergency Stop Assistant can bring the car to a safe stop and place an SOS call if the driver is unresponsive. Some features are optional, so equipment can vary by trim and package.
• Infotainment: The optional Digital Cockpit Professional setup brings a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, and navigation. Every 3 Series has Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, and a 10-speaker HiFi sound system, while Connected Package Pro adds BMW Remote Services and Intelligent Personal Assistant.
• Fuel efficiency: The M340i returned 9.4 L/100 km on the evaluation route, versus an official combined rating of 9.2 L/100 km.

Which 2022 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?

The 2022 BMW 3 Series is offered in 5 trim levels: 330i, 330e, M340i, M3, and M3 Competition.

Here's the short version:

• 330i: This is the most straightforward entry point if you want the 3 Series experience without chasing maximum performance. It should suit you if you value the core BMW formula and want to keep costs more manageable.
• 330e: Choose this if you want plug-in hybrid capability and the added efficiency of electric driving for short trips. It also qualifies for incentives, which can improve its value proposition.
• M340i: This is the best-value pick for most shoppers who want a serious performance sedan. It adds the turbocharged inline-six, xDrive, M Sport hardware, and the strongest blend of speed and everyday usability.
• M3: Pick this if you want the most intense performance character in the lineup and are willing to pay for it.
• M3 Competition: This is the top performance choice for buyers who want the most capable and most expensive version of the 3 Series.

Only models equipped with the optional adaptive LED headlights with Laserlight qualify for the Top Safety Pick rating.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 161 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 18.04% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $34,141 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 BMW 3 Series's resale value?

The current average of $34,141 CAD sits slightly below last year's $41,656 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the car more appealing to used buyers today but less favourable for sellers trying to maximise return. If you own one, the softer pricing means you may need to be realistic when setting an asking price.

The good news is that the 3 Series still has strong enthusiast appeal, and that helps support demand. A model with a strong reputation for driving enjoyment and owner satisfaction is usually easier to move than a less distinctive sedan.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series safe?

The 2022 3 Series earns a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The 3 Series also earns five-star ratings across the board from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), including for rollover resistance.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

BMW’s standard safety tech package includes Active Guard, with forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Available Traffic Jam Assistant adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-centring assist, while Emergency Stop Assistant can bring the car to a safe stop and place an SOS call if the driver is unresponsive.

One caveat is that BMW’s standard safety equipment is relatively sparse compared with some rivals, and several useful driver-assistance features are optional. If safety tech matters to you, it’s worth checking the exact package content on any used example you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2022 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 18.04% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• BMW’s 2022 updates are minor and focused on equipment changes.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $40,036 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $34,141 CAD average.
• It brings a refreshed look, updated cockpit, and more technology.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the better value if you want the classic 3 Series formula at a lower price and can live without the newer styling and tech updates. If you’re willing to spend more for a fresher cabin and a more modern presentation, the 2023 is the better upgrade path.
