What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes the 330i, 330e, M340i, M3, and M3 Competition. The 330i and 330e are the more accessible choices, while the M340i adds a stronger performance focus with M Performance exterior treatment, 19-inch wheels, Shadowline trim, and blue brake calipers. The M340i is the best-value pick if you want the strongest blend of performance and everyday usability.
• Powertrain: The 330i xDrive sedan and 330e use a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the 330e adds plug-in hybrid technology with 32 kilometres of estimated electric driving range. The M340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, and BMW says it can reach 100 kilometres per hour in 4.3 seconds.
• Safety package: Active Guard includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Traffic Jam Assistant adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-centring assist, while Emergency Stop Assistant can bring the car to a safe stop and place an SOS call. Some of these features are optional, so check the equipment list carefully.
• Infotainment: Digital Cockpit Professional adds a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, and navigation. Every 3 Series has Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, and a 10-speaker HiFi sound system, while Connected Package Pro adds BMW Remote Services and Intelligent Personal Assistant.
• Fuel efficiency: The M340i returned 9.4 litres per 100 kilometres on the evaluation route, versus an official combined rating of 9.2 L/100 km.

The safety package is not especially generous on lower-spec examples, so make sure the features you want are actually fitted to the car you’re considering.

Which 2022 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?

The 2022 BMW 3 Series is offered in 5 trim levels: 330i, 330e, M340i, M3, and M3 Competition.

Here's the short version:

• 330i: This is the entry point if you want the 3 Series experience at the lowest price, but you should verify which safety and convenience features are included because BMW’s standard safety tech package is relatively sparse.
• 330e: Choose this if you want plug-in hybrid efficiency and the 32-kilometre electric driving range, especially if your daily driving is short and you can charge regularly.
• M340i: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the strongest mix of performance, standard equipment, and everyday usability without jumping to full M car pricing.
• M3: Pick this only if you want the most serious performance focus and are willing to pay for it.
• M3 Competition: This is the top performance choice, but it makes sense mainly if you want the most extreme version of the lineup.

Only models equipped with the optional adaptive LED headlights with Laserlight qualify for the Top Safety Pick award.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile examples.

• Deal availability: 26.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 167 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 17.98% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $34,208 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 BMW 3 Series's resale value?

The current average of $34,208 CAD sits slightly below last year's $41,708 CAD.

That price decline suggests buyers currently have more leverage than sellers. If you plan to resell later, the softer market today may help you buy at a better entry point, but it also means you should be realistic about near-term depreciation.

The 3 Series still benefits from strong brand appeal and a reputation for driving enjoyment, which can help support demand when you eventually sell. Well-equipped examples with desirable features and clean history should be easier to move than stripped-down cars with higher maintenance needs.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series safe?

The 2022 BMW 3 Series earns a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The 3 Series also earns five-star ratings across the board from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), including for rollover resistance.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Active Guard includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Available Traffic Jam Assistant adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-centring assist, while Emergency Stop Assistant can bring the car to a safe stop and place an SOS call if the driver becomes unresponsive.

One caveat is that BMW’s standard safety tech package is relatively limited, and the Top Safety Pick award requires the optional adaptive LED headlights with Laserlight.

Should I buy a 2022 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 26.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 17.98% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It keeps the core 3 Series formula with minor equipment updates and broad trim choice.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $39,947 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $34,208 CAD average.
• It adds sleeker styling and an updated driver-oriented cockpit.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2022 is the smarter buy because it delivers the core 3 Series experience at a lower average price. If you care more about newer styling and updated tech, the 2023 is the better fit, but you’ll pay more for it.
