Is the 2021 BMW X5 reliable?

The owner feedback highlights a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with praise for the SUV’s smooth ride, high-quality interior, and strong value retention. The expert evaluation also points to a polished, well-built cabin and a powertrain lineup that feels refined in daily use.

BMW’s plug-in hybrid version adds a 24-kWh battery and can deliver up to 50 km of all-electric range, which may appeal if you want a more flexible long-term ownership profile. Even so, you should still budget carefully for maintenance and option packages, since this is a premium SUV with potentially expensive upkeep.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW X5?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The X5’s standard xLine look brings matte aluminium grilles, satin-aluminium exterior trim, roof rails, and underbody protection, while M Sport styling adds body-colour wheel arch trim, bumper trim, rear underbody protection, side skirts, and high-gloss black exterior accents. If you want the most upscale appearance, the higher-spec models also bring larger wheels and more distinctive interior detailing.
• Powertrain: You get a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder in the xDrive40i, a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 in the M50i, a 600 hp twin-turbo V8 in the X5 M, and a plug-in hybrid xDrive45e with a 24-kWh battery and up to 50 km of electric range. All engines use an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all models include AWD as standard equipment.
• Safety package: Every X5 includes blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera. The Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, but the system’s real-world behaviour deserves a careful test drive.
• Infotainment: Standard equipment includes a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, navigation, HD Radio, satellite radio, Bluetooth, five USB ports, voice recognition, a 10-speaker sound system, automatic climate control, proximity key, panoramic sunroof, and remote start. Available upgrades include a head-up display, Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless smartphone charger, and premium audio systems.
• Fuel efficiency: The xDrive45e is rated at 4.7 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres when using electricity and gas, while the gasoline-only xDrive45e is rated at 11.5 L/100 km combined. The xDrive models are rated at 10.4 L/100 km combined, the M50i at 12.7 L/100 km combined, and the X5 M at 15.7 L/100 km combined.

Which 2021 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2021 BMW X5 is offered in 4 trim levels: xDrive40i, xDrive45e, M50i, X5 M.

Here's the short version:

• xDrive40i: This is the entry point and the best-value choice for most shoppers, since it gives you the core X5 experience with the standard six-cylinder engine, AWD, and the full base tech and safety roster without pushing the price into the higher-performance territory.
• xDrive45e: Choose this if you want the plug-in hybrid setup and the ability to drive up to 50 km on electric power before the gasoline engine takes over. It suits you best if you can charge regularly and want a more efficiency-focused X5.
• M50i: This is the step-up pick if you want a much stronger V8 and are willing to pay more for it. It makes sense if performance matters more to you than fuel use.
• X5 M: This is the most extreme version, with 600 hp and even more if you add the Competition Package. It is the right choice only if you want maximum performance and are comfortable with the highest ownership costs.

The standard safety package is already extensive, but the Driving Assistance Professional Package is worth evaluating carefully because its real-world lane-keeping and adaptive cruise behaviour showed clear limitations in testing.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW X5?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.

• Deal availability: 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 174 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.56% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $44,540 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $44,548 CAD sits slightly below last year's $50,949 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can work in your favour if you are buying now but may mean softer resale expectations if you plan to sell soon. A lower current average often signals that future sellers may need to price more competitively to attract attention.

The X5’s strong owner satisfaction helps support demand, especially among shoppers looking for a premium SUV with a polished cabin and strong everyday usability. That kind of reputation can help cushion resale value even when the broader market softens.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 BMW X5 safe?

The 2021 BMW X5 has been given nearly all Good ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns a four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

Every X5 comes with blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera. BMW also offers the Driving Assistance Professional Package, which adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality.

That package is worth testing carefully, because the system showed trouble reacting smoothly in real-world use and the lane-keeping function could become unreliable in sunshine and light rain. If you want the most confidence from the X5’s safety tech, make sure the specific vehicle you are considering behaves properly before you buy.

Should I buy a 2021 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.56% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 model adds the second-generation plug-in hybrid variant to the lineup, giving you more choice if you want electrified driving.

The bottom line: The 2021 BMW X5 is a smart pick if you want a luxury SUV with strong owner satisfaction, a broad trim range, and a market that currently favours careful shoppers. If you are price-sensitive, the 2021 is especially worth considering when you find a well-equipped example near the low end of the range, while buyers who want the newest plug-in hybrid option should focus on this model year specifically.
