Is the 2021 BMW X5 a good car?

Yes — 4.67/5. It also earns an expert rating of 8/10. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Technology.

Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, safety features, high-quality interior, and advanced technology. The X5’s broad appeal also comes through in its flexible use case as a premium family SUV with a large cargo area and multiple powertrain choices. Good resale value is another recurring strength.

Is the 2021 BMW X5 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with praise for the SUV’s smooth ride, safety features, and high-quality interior. The expert evaluation also notes that the X5’s cabin is quiet and its suspension soaks up bumps and dips well, which supports a trouble-free day-to-day feel. BMW also includes a broad standard equipment list, which can help reduce the need to add essentials after purchase.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the X5 can become expensive to own if you need repairs or add options, so a careful inspection and service-history review matter.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW X5?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Standard xLine models have matte aluminium grilles, satin-aluminium exterior accents, and an upscale appearance, while M Sport styling adds body-colour trim, high-gloss black accents, and a more aggressive cabin treatment. If you want the best-value balance of appearance and equipment, the xLine setup is the safer starting point; if you want a sportier look, the M Sport package is the clear step up.
• Powertrain: The X5 lineup includes a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder, twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 options, and a plug-in hybrid with a 24-kWh battery. All engines use an eight-speed automatic, and all Canadian models include AWD.
• Safety package: Every X5 includes blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera. The available Driving Assistance Professional Package adds stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, but the lane-keeping system can be inconsistent.
• Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, navigation, Bluetooth, five USB ports, HD Radio, satellite radio, voice recognition, automatic climate control, proximity key, panoramic sunroof, and remote start.
• Fuel efficiency: The X5 xDrive gets 10.4 L/100 km combined, the X5 xDrive45e gets 11.5 L/100 km combined on gasoline and 4.7 Le/100 km when using electricity and gas, and the X5 M reaches 15.7 L/100 km combined.

Which 2021 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2021 BMW X5 is offered in 4 trim levels: xDrive40i, xDrive45e, M50i, M.

Here's the short version:

• xDrive40i: This is the entry-level model in Canada, but it still gives you the core X5 experience with AWD, the 3.0-litre inline six, and the full standard safety and tech roster. It is the best-value choice if you want the X5’s luxury, space, and equipment without paying for extra power you may not need.
• xDrive45e: This plug-in hybrid adds 389 hp, 443 lb-ft of torque, a 24-kWh battery, and up to 50 km of all-electric range according to Natural Resources Canada. Choose this one if you want the most efficient and most versatile daily-use version, especially if you can charge at home.
• M50i: This trim brings the twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 with 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. It suits you if you want a much stronger performance feel and are willing to accept higher fuel use and a higher purchase price.
• M: This is the most powerful version, with 600 hp, or 617 hp with the Competition Package. It is the right pick only if outright performance matters more to you than running costs.

BMW equips every X5 with a long list of standard safety and driver assistance features, but the available hands-on Driving Assistance Professional Package has some real-world limitations.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW X5?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient and compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 167 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.02% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $44,493 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $44,497 CAD sits slightly below last year's $51,754 CAD.

That price drop suggests buyers have more negotiating room today than they did a year ago. If you buy well now, you may have less downside risk than someone who paid closer to the previous average. For a future seller, the softer market means resale value will depend more heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment than on broad market momentum alone.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 BMW X5 safe?

The 2021 BMW X5 has been given nearly all Good ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns a four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

BMW equips every X5 with blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera. The available Driving Assistance Professional Package adds stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, but testing found that the lane-keeping system could struggle in sunshine and light rain, and the adaptive cruise control did not always react smoothly to stopped traffic.

Should I buy a 2021 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.02% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• For 2021, the lineup adds the second-generation plug-in hybrid variant, broadening the X5’s appeal for buyers who want more powertrain choice.

The bottom line: The 2021 X5 makes sense if you want the broadest mix of powertrains in this generation and you value the year’s softer pricing. If you are shopping mainly on price, a nearby year with similar equipment may be worth comparing, but the 2021 stands out for its strong owner satisfaction, wide trim range, and added plug-in hybrid option.
