Is the 2021 BMW X5 a good car?

Yes — the 2021 BMW X5 earns a 4.67/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Technology.

Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, safety features, and high-quality interior, and they also like the advanced technology and strong value retention. The expert assessment also describes the X5 as a premium SUV with strong engineering and craftsmanship, which supports the impression that it is built to be dependable in regular use. BMW’s maintenance and ownership costs can still be a consideration for used buyers, so you should budget carefully if you plan to keep the vehicle long term.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW X5?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The X5’s upscale appearance changes with trim, from standard xLine models with matte aluminium grilles and satin-aluminium exterior accents to M Sport models with body-colour wheel arch trim, bumper trim, rear underbody protection, side skirts, and high-gloss black roof rails and window surrounds. Base equipment is already strong, but the more expensive trims add a more distinctive look and feel.
• Powertrain: You get a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder in the xDrive40i, a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 in the M50i, a more powerful twin-turbo V8 in the X5 M, and a plug-in hybrid xDrive45e with a 24-kWh battery and up to 50 km of all-electric range. The hybrid is the efficiency play, while the V8 models are for buyers who want much more power.
• Safety package: Every X5 includes blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera. The hands-on Driving Assistance Professional Package adds stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, but the lane-keeping and camera-based functions can be inconsistent in some conditions.
• Infotainment: Standard equipment includes a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, navigation, HD Radio, satellite radio, Bluetooth, five USB ports, voice recognition, automatic climate control, proximity key, panoramic sunroof, and remote start. Available upgrades include a head-up display, wireless smartphone charging, and premium audio systems.
• Fuel efficiency: The xDrive45e is rated at 4.7 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres when using electricity and gas, while the xDrive model is rated at 10.4 L/100 km combined, the xDrive45e at 11.5 L/100 km combined on gasoline, the M50i at 12.7 L/100 km combined, and the X5 M at 15.7 L/100 km combined.

Which 2021 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2021 BMW X5 is offered in 4 trim levels: xDrive40i, xDrive45e, M50i, and X5 M.

Here's the short version:

• xDrive40i: This is the entry point and the best-value choice for most shoppers because it already gives you the core X5 experience: the 3.0-litre inline six, standard AWD, the 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone integration, and a long list of safety features. If you want the most balanced mix of price, equipment, and everyday usability, this is the trim to start with.
• xDrive45e: Choose this if you want the plug-in hybrid setup, up to 50 km of electric driving range, and the smooth transition between electric and gasoline power. It suits you best if you can charge regularly and want lower fuel use without giving up the X5’s premium feel.
• M50i: This trim is for you if you want a much stronger V8 and are willing to pay more for it. It adds serious performance, but it also brings higher fuel use and a much higher purchase price.
• X5 M: This is the top performance choice, with the most power in the lineup. It makes sense only if outright speed is your priority and you are comfortable with the highest ownership costs.

The standard safety equipment is already extensive, but the available Driving Assistance Professional Package has some real-world limitations, so you should test those systems carefully before buying.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW X5?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop, compare, and negotiate.

• Deal availability: 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 160 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.04% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $43,801 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $43,806 CAD sits slightly below last year's $51,563 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can be good news if you are buying now but less favourable if you are planning to sell soon. A softer market usually means future sellers may need to price more competitively to attract attention. Even so, the X5’s strong owner satisfaction and premium reputation should help it remain appealing to used shoppers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 BMW X5 safe?

The 2021 BMW X5 has been given nearly all Good ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns a four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

BMW equips every X5 with blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera. The available Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, but the lane-keeping and camera-based features can struggle in sunshine and light rain, which is a meaningful caveat if you are relying on those systems often.

Should I buy a 2021 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.04% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• For 2021, the lineup adds the second-generation plug-in hybrid variant, broadening your powertrain choices without changing the X5’s core luxury-SUV formula.

The bottom line: If you want the broadest mix of powertrains in this generation and a used-market price that has eased, the 2021 X5 is the year to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can still shop nearby years, but the 2021 stands out for its expanded lineup and strong owner satisfaction.
