Is the 2020 Ford F-150 a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Ford F-150 earns 4.7/5 from owners and 8.3/10 from our experts. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Form and function.

Owners consistently praise its power, smooth ride, and interior comfort, and they also value the strong engine performance. The truck’s use-case appeal is broad: you can use it as a commuter, a family vehicle, and a worksite tool without it feeling out of place.

The main trade-offs are that advanced safety features are not standard and the interior materials can feel cheap. Even so, the market still shows 30.7% of listings as good or great deals, which points to solid value opportunities.

The expert assessment also highlights a truck that is built to handle daily use while still delivering the capability you expect from a full-size pickup.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the truck’s equipment and condition match the way it was used, especially if it saw hard work or heavy towing.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford F-150?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The XL is the work-truck starting point, with steel wheels, air conditioning, manual locks, a basic driver information display, and standard forward automatic emergency braking. The XLT adds 17-inch painted aluminium wheels, chrome bumpers and grille, cruise control, SYNC 3, and a WiFi hotspot. The Lariat adds leather-trimmed seats, heated power-folding mirrors, dual-zone climate control, blind spot monitoring, and power heated and cooled front seats. The King Ranch adds saddle-leather upholstery, Bang & Olufsen audio, heated rear seats, and a remote release tailgate. The Platinum adds LED bed lighting, fog lamps, power outlets, ambient lighting, and massaging seats. The Raptor is the off-road-focused model, while the Limited adds premium leather upholstery and a dual-panel moonroof.
• Powertrain: You get a 3.3-litre V6 with 290 horsepower on the XL and XLT, plus available 2.7-litre turbocharged EcoBoost V6, 5.0-litre V8, 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6, and 3.0-litre Power Stroke turbodiesel V6 options. The base V6 is fine for daily driving, while the V8, turbo EcoBoost V6s, and turbodiesel are better suited to towing and hauling.
• Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 brings automatic high beams, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. Forward automatic emergency braking is standard, including on the XL, but advanced safety features are not standard across the range.
• Infotainment: The XL has a basic AM/FM radio, with SYNC optional. The XLT gets SYNC 3 with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, enhanced voice recognition, pinch-to-zoom map functionality, and smart-charging USB ports. FordPass with a 4G Wi-Fi modem is also available on XLT-and-up trims.
• Fuel efficiency: The turbodiesel with rear-wheel drive returns 11.1 L/100 km city, 8.3 highway, and 9.8 combined. The closest gasoline-powered equivalent, the 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6 with rear-wheel drive, returns 12.0 L/100 km city, 8.9 highway, and 10.6 combined. The V8 returns 14.3 L/100 km city, 10.6 highway, and 12.6 combined.

Which 2020 Ford F-150 trim should I buy?

The 2020 Ford F-150 is offered in 7 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, Raptor, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• XL: This is the value-first work truck, and it makes sense if you want the lowest entry point and can live with a very basic cabin. It includes standard forward automatic emergency braking, but you’ll want to step up if you care about convenience and infotainment.
• XLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds SYNC 3, an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a WiFi hotspot, and more exterior polish without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• Lariat: This is the sweet spot if you want a more comfortable daily driver, thanks to leather-trimmed seats, heated and cooled front seats, dual-zone climate control, and blind spot monitoring.
• King Ranch: Choose this if you want a more distinctive upscale feel, with saddle-leather upholstery, heated rear seats, and premium audio.
• Platinum: This is for shoppers who want more luxury touches, including massaging seats, ambient lighting, and extra convenience features.
• Raptor: This is the off-road specialist, with specialised off-road running gear and hardware built for rough terrain.
• Limited: This is the top comfort-focused choice, with premium leather upholstery, a dual-panel moonroof, and the most upscale presentation in the range.

Ford Co-Pilot360 is available or standard on higher trims, while the XL gets only the most basic driver-assistance setup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Ford F-150?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,164 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.13% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $30,642 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Ford F-150's resale value?

The current average of $31,660 CAD sits slightly below last year's $33,725 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can make it harder for a future seller to command a premium unless the truck is especially well equipped or exceptionally clean. If you own a higher-trim or well-maintained example, you may still benefit from stronger demand than a bare-bones truck. The broad appeal of the F-150 helps support resale, but condition and configuration will matter a lot.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Ford F-150 safe?

The 2020 Ford F-150 SuperCrew received top marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and the SuperCrew trucks earned five-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, while the SuperCab and regular cab managed four-star ratings.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, curve control, a tyre-pressure monitoring system, AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control, rain-sensing headlights, an anti-theft system, and the SOS post-crash alert system. Ford Co-Pilot360 adds automatic high beams, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. Pro Trailer Backup Assist is also available to make trailer manoeuvring easier.

The main caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard across the lineup, so you should check trim carefully if driver assistance matters to you.

Should I buy a 2020 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.13% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It balances commuter comfort, work-ready capability, and a broad engine lineup.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $36,479 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $31,660 CAD average.
• It adds a redesigned interior with more convenience features and Sync 4.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the smarter buy because it combines strong owner satisfaction, broad capability, and softer pricing. If you’re willing to pay more for newer tech and a more modern cabin, the 2021 is the better upgrade path.
