What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford F-150?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The XL is the work-truck starting point with steel wheels, air conditioning, an AM/FM radio, manual locks, a 2.3-inch driver information display, and standard forward automatic emergency braking. The XLT adds 17-inch painted aluminium wheels, chrome bumpers and grille, cruise control, SYNC 3, and a WiFi hotspot. The Lariat adds push-button start, leather-trimmed seats, heated power-folding side mirrors, an 8-inch colour driver information display, dual-zone climate control, blind spot monitoring, and power heated and cooled front seats. The King Ranch adds saddle-leather upholstery, special stitching, a Bang & Olufsen premium sound system, heated rear seats, and a remote release tailgate. The Platinum adds chrome badging, body-colour bumpers, LED bed lighting and fog lamps, a remote release tailgate, power outlets, ambient lighting, and massaging seats. The Raptor adds specialised off-road running gear. The Limited adds premium leather upholstery and a dual-panel moonroof.
• Powertrain: You get a 3.3-litre V6 with 290 horsepower on the XL and XLT, plus available 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6, 5.0-litre V8, 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6, and 3.0-litre Power Stroke turbodiesel options. The lineup is broad, and the stronger engines are the ones better suited to towing and hauling.
• Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 brings automatic high beams, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. Forward automatic emergency braking is standard, even on the XL, but advanced safety features are not standard across the board.
• Infotainment: The XL can be had with a basic system, while the XLT’s SYNC 3 uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, enhanced voice recognition, pinch-to-zoom map functionality, and smart-charging USB ports. FordPass with a 4G Wi-Fi modem is available on XLT-and-up trims.

Which 2020 Ford F-150 trim should I buy?

The 2020 Ford F-150 is offered in 7 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, Raptor, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• XL: This is the most affordable route into the F-150, but it is clearly a work-focused trim with limited standard equipment. It makes sense if you want the truck’s core capability and plan to add features selectively.
• XLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds SYNC 3, an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a WiFi hotspot, and more everyday convenience without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• Lariat: This is the sweet spot if you want a more comfortable and upscale truck, with leather-trimmed seats, heated and cooled front seats, blind spot monitoring, dual-zone climate control, and push-button start.
• King Ranch: Choose this if you want a distinctive western-themed cabin and more luxury touches, including saddle-leather upholstery, a premium sound system, heated rear seats, and a remote release tailgate.
• Platinum: This trim is for shoppers who want a more premium feel, with chrome accents, LED bed lighting and fog lamps, ambient lighting, power outlets, and massaging seats.
• Raptor: This is the off-road-focused choice, with specialised running gear and hardware built for rough terrain rather than luxury.
• Limited: This is the top comfort-oriented trim, with premium leather upholstery, a dual-panel moonroof, and the most upscale presentation in the lineup.

The XL includes standard forward automatic emergency braking, and Ford Co-Pilot360 features become more available as you move up the range.

• Deal availability: 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,151 listings available.

The current average of $31,589 CAD sits slightly below last year's $34,081 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer today, but it also means a future seller may need to be realistic about expectations. If you buy well and keep the truck in strong condition, you may be better positioned when it comes time to resell.

The F-150’s broad appeal should help support demand over time, especially because it serves so many roles well. Trucks with strong owner satisfaction ratings tend to stay attractive in the used market, which can help cushion resale value.

Ford Co-Pilot360 adds automatic high beams, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. Pro Trailer Backup Assist is also available.

One thing to keep in mind is that advanced safety features are not standard across the lineup, so you will want to check carefully for the equipment you want on the specific truck you are considering.

Should I buy a 2020 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.31% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It offers broad powertrain choice, strong towing ability, and a comfortable, modern cabin.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $36,624 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $31,589 CAD average.
• It adds a redesigned interior with more convenience features and Sync 4.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter buy because it combines strong owner satisfaction, broad capability, and a lower average price. If you are willing to pay more for newer tech and a redesigned cabin, the 2021 is the better upgrade path.
