CarGurus Analysis: 2020 BMW X5
Summary
With 150 currently listed for sale and an average price of $39,594 CAD, 35.3% of 2020 BMW X5 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 BMW X5 4.77 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2020 BMW X5 stands out as a luxury SUV that blends everyday comfort with the kind of driving character BMW buyers expect. It is part of the fourth generation, which brought a redesigned X5 with more room inside, an oversized twin-kidney grille, and a pair of 12.3-inch digital displays for the instrumentation and iDrive infotainment system. In Canada, all-wheel drive remained standard, and the X5 continued to use turbocharged inline six-cylinder and V8 engines with an eight-speed automatic transmission. That combination gives the 2020 X5 broad appeal for buyers who want a premium midsize SUV that feels more engaging than many rivals.
For 2020, BMW added a second V8-powered version called the X5 M50i, and the full-fat X5 M returned with at least 600 horsepower, while the X5 M Competition delivered 617 horsepower. Those performance models underline how wide the X5 range can be, from refined family transport to seriously quick luxury SUV. The broader lineup also benefits from the X5’s roomy interior and generous cargo space, though its split tailgate can make it awkward to reach items that have slid forward. Buyers should also keep in mind that V8-engined X5s are not fuel efficient, and ownership costs can be high, even if the model’s strong performance and upscale feel make it an appealing used choice.

The vehicle had 98% of what I was looking for which resulted in a purchase. Great value, great condition, and top of the line technology. The X5 stands on its own and cant be compared to other models.

It boasts exceptional build quality, both internally and externally, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship. Its interior provides unparalleled comfort, while its performance is commendable. Despite its class and engine size, it delivers respectable miles per gallon (mpg). In a straightforward comparison, the GLE with its 4-cylinder engine achieves similar mpg figures to the X5 with its 6-cylinder engine, despite the X5s superior speed. Additionally, the tech features function seamlessly, enhancing the overall driving experience. - Gustavo Woltmann

I have had 2 X5 models(2017 & 2020) both were amazing to drive. But the 2020 really made me feel like I was driving in luxury. The exterior is sleek, and sporty. Even with 20 inch wheels the drive is soft. The interior coffee color was stellar, took it up a whole other level. There is a wide variety of safety features to turn on or off. There is a clear 360 view of the parking camera. Large screen for center console area. This model specifically also kept drinks warm/cold in the cup holder. My favorite part of the interior though is the accent lighting. The whole moonroof would light up and you could always slide back the shade if you didn’t want it. When making the change from the 2017 to 2020 model, we looked at many SUVs and it was very hard to compare to other makers. This was why we ended up with the same vehicle and will probably do it again when ready!

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW X5?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 151 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.43% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $39,609 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 BMW X5's resale value?
The current average of $39,619 CAD sits slightly below last year's $44,230 CAD.
That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently now, but it also means future resale values may face some pressure if the market stays subdued. For a seller, the current trend suggests you may need to price competitively to stand out. Strong condition, complete maintenance records, and desirable equipment should matter more if you want to protect value.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.77/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 BMW X5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.43% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.77/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $35,370 CAD, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $39,619 CAD average.
- It introduced the redesigned X5 with a roomier cabin and updated tech.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $43,943 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $39,619 CAD average.
- It adds a plug-in hybrid option and keeps the same broad luxury-SUV appeal.
The bottom line: The 2020 is the best all-around pick if you want the strongest mix of owner satisfaction, softened pricing, and broad inventory. If your priority is saving money, the 2019 is the better value path; if you want newer features and are willing to pay more, the 2021 is the upgrade route.
