CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Volkswagen Atlas
Summary
With 30 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,217 CAD, 33.3% of 2019 Volkswagen Atlas listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas 4.5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas stands out as a three-row midsize SUV that was designed for the North American market and immediately distinguished itself with a vast interior, straightforward layout, and refined driving dynamics. It also has a premium feel thanks to its handsome styling and practical focus, which helped it carve out a niche as a family-friendly SUV. For buyers who want space and a clean, no-nonsense cabin, that combination is a major part of its appeal.
Inside, the Atlas is especially strong on room and usability. It offers very roomy second and third rows, can carry up to seven, and includes plenty of storage bins, cupholders and a big centre console. Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto add everyday convenience, while higher trims bring features such as the VW Digital Cockpit and a larger infotainment screen. The 2019 model also made autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian assist and a heated windshield standard, and it added a power liftgate to the Comfortline trim.
There are a few trade-offs to keep in mind. The Atlas has slightly below-average reliability scores compared with some competitors, and out-of-warranty repair costs can be high. Early models also had some reliability issues, including transmission and electrical problems, so a full service history and confirmation that any recall or warranty work has been completed are important. Even so, the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas remains appealing for shoppers who value space, practicality and a polished driving experience over outright efficiency.

The visibility in this car is amazing. The warning light on the side mirrors is an added bonus but seriously if you even glance over your shoulder you can see easily. The turning radius is truly exceptional. Nothing else I test drove could even come close! Even in smaller cars like the Acadia or Outback the turning radius was way outdone by the Atlas. The acceleration and braking are really good too, at least on the 3.6L that I bought.

My wife and I fell in love with(and purchased) the first one that we test drove. We had very specific features that we were after(3rd row seats, 2nd row captains, leather interior, lots of leg room, etc..) and the one that we looked at covered all of the bases and then some!!! We were upgrading from a Dodge Journey and we needed soemthing bigger because our kids have grown up so much over the past 7 years and as soon as we looked inside the Atlas it was like Woa.. this thing is HUGE!!!! We were sold. We also test drove a Chevy Traverse(which we liked as well) and a Ford Explorer and they were also both very nice and had all the features we needed but at the end of the day, we just liked the Atlas better, and the warranty couldnt be touched!!! Hope this helps.

The outside is stylish and I love that its not rounded , yet the only downfall is that it didnt drive as smooth as I suspected but made the mistake of driving a Volvo before. If I hadnt compared it I would have Def been interested .

How much does the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,707 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $21,680 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $29,415 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $29,382 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −26.12% |
Prices have softened 26.12% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 190 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas a good car?
Yes — the 4.5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction for this model year. The 2019 Atlas is aimed at you if you want a three-row midsize SUV with a vast interior, a straightforward layout, and nimble driving dynamics. It also stands out for its very roomy second and third rows, practical packaging, and clean design, which make it especially appealing for family use. With 29.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market offers a decent amount of value-oriented inventory.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2019 Atlas does have some known trade-offs, including transmission hesitations and failures on VR6 models, electrical faults, and premature wear of interior components. It also has below-average fuel economy and high maintenance costs compared with some rivals. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is worth managing carefully with a thorough service-history check and a close inspection before you commit.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Volkswagen Atlas?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer's market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 190 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 26.12% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $21,680 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas's resale value?
The current average of $21,707 CAD sits slightly below last year's $29,382 CAD.
That drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the Atlas more attractive to buyers today but less favourable for future sellers if prices continue to soften. If you buy near the current average, your resale position will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and maintenance records. A well-kept example should still appeal to shoppers who want a spacious, practical three-row SUV.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2019 Volkswagen Atlas or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 26.12% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2019 Atlas makes sense if you want a roomy, well-equipped three-row SUV and you can find one priced near the lower end of the market. If you're especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby model years as well, but the 2019 is a solid starting point when value, space, and everyday usability matter most.
