Is the 2019 BMW X5 reliable?

User feedback points to a generally positive ownership experience, with praise for the X5’s strong performance, comfort, and luxury feel. The same feedback also flags electrical issues and a limited back seat, which are worth keeping in mind if you plan to keep the vehicle for the long haul.

BMW’s powertrain and chassis tuning also support a dependable driving experience, with the transmission described as smooth and the overall package as one of the better engine-and-transmission combinations in the segment.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that repair costs and electrical gremlins can become more important as the vehicle ages.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 BMW X5?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The xDrive40i gives you AWD, adaptive LED headlights and fog lights, a panoramic sunroof, an adaptive suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped and power-adjustable steering wheel, faux-leather upholstery, a power liftgate, ambient lighting, and a digital gauge cluster with a 12.3-inch secondary touchscreen. The xDrive50i adds V8 power, so it suits you if you want more performance and are willing to pay for it.
• Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder in the xDrive40i or a turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 in the xDrive50i. The inline six is praised for smooth, consistent power, while the V8 is the choice if you want stronger acceleration.
• Safety package: The available driver-assistance suite includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Most of these features are optional on the most economical version, so check carefully before you buy.
• Infotainment: The X5 uses an updated iDrive system with a 12.3-inch secondary touchscreen. Available tech includes a head-up display, wireless charging, enhanced USB and Bluetooth connectivity, a rear-view camera with 3D view, gesture control, and Parking Assistant Plus.
• Fuel efficiency: The xDrive40i is rated at 11.7 L/100 km in city driving, 9.1 L/100 km on the highway, and 10.5 L/100 km combined.

Which 2019 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2019 BMW X5 is offered in 2 trim levels: xDrive40i and xDrive50i.

Here's the short version:

• xDrive40i: This is the best-value choice if you want the core X5 experience. You get the smooth turbocharged inline six, AWD, and a strong standard equipment list, including the panoramic sunroof, adaptive suspension, and digital gauge cluster. It’s the trim that makes the most sense for most shoppers.
• xDrive50i: Choose this if you want the V8 and are willing to pay for the extra performance. It’s the more powerful option, but the content suggests the xDrive40i already delivers the best balance of value and capability for most buyers.

The safety package is impressive, but many of its features are optional on the base xDrive40i, so verify equipment carefully before you commit.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 BMW X5?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.

• Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 165 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.39% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $35,790 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $35,812 CAD sits slightly below last year's $41,346 CAD.

That price drop suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to be realistic about pricing if they want to move the vehicle quickly. If you buy now, you’re entering at a lower point in the cycle than last year’s average, which can help cushion depreciation over the next ownership period.

The X5’s strong reputation for performance and comfort should help support demand, especially among shoppers looking for a luxury SUV with a more engaging drive. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 BMW X5 safe?

The 2019 BMW X5 earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover tests and five-star ratings in side crash tests. The IIHS named it a Top Safety Pick+ and awarded top scores in all tests.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The available driver-assistance suite includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Those features are available rather than universally standard, so trim and package selection matter.

One caveat is that the semi-autonomous driving features are described as disappointing and potentially distracting at speed, so you should be cautious about relying on them too heavily.

Should I buy a 2019 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.39% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.56/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2019 X5 is an all-new version that brings more room, improved power, and a redesigned interior with updated iDrive.

The bottom line: If you want the newer-generation X5 with strong performance, more space, and a lower average price than last year, the 2019 model is the one to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may still want to compare nearby years, but the 2019 gives you the newer design and a meaningful market discount versus last year’s average.
