The 2018 Hyundai Kona stood out in the subcompact SUV class by pairing distinctive styling with a strong equipment list and an available turbocharged engine. Hyundai launched it in Canada for the 2018 model year with five trim levels, and even the mainstream versions came with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, a six-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive, while all-wheel drive was either available or standard depending on trim. The Kona also offered a locking centre differential that kept power split 50/50 front-to-rear for improved traction on loose surfaces, which gave it a more capable feel than many small crossovers.

Standard equipment included 16-inch alloy wheels, a 3.5-inch screen in the instrument cluster, air conditioning, heated front seats, keyless entry, a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment screen. Buyers who wanted more performance could move to the turbocharged 1.6-litre engine, which produced 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque and was paired with a seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission and standard AWD. The top Ultimate trim added features such as Hyundai Blue Link, a head-up display, an eight-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless phone charging, an Infinity premium audio system, and automatic high beams.
There were some clear trade-offs, though. The base engine was fairly pedestrian, and the first-generation Kona was cramped inside and short on cargo space. Even so, the 2018 Hyundai Kona remained appealing because it combined unusual styling, useful available all-wheel drive, and a generous feature set in a segment where many rivals were more conventional.

Id compare this car to a Crosstrek. It feels solid and responsive has enough room for an adult passenger with a car seat in the back. Its a great value for the price which may be why I had trouble finding one that fit me. The crash ratings are also reassuring. The sport mode gives you some nice boost when/if needed and makes everything feel better while on the road. The lane assist is taking a little bit to get used to as it nudges steering to keep within the lines.
