Why it stands out
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class stands out as a compact luxury sedan that delivers a near-perfect blend of comfort, performance, price, and snob appeal. It is positioned as an appealing introduction to Mercedes-Benz’s German luxury sedans, and for 2017 it offers more of the same qualities that have made the C-Class a favourite among buyers.
That combination is what makes it distinctive: it aims to feel upscale and satisfying without losing the balance that draws shoppers to the segment in the first place. Drivers also tend to praise its powerful performance, stylish design, luxurious features, responsiveness, and comfort. On the other hand, some owners note that maintenance costs can be high, taller occupants may find the cabin a bit cramped, and there have been concerns about a leaky fuel line in some models.

This is a great car. It’s got the right engine and specs needed for the C-Class sedan compared to the C300 model.

Reviewed a 2017 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 S Coupe on Apr 11, 2023
The c63s is one of the best cars Ive ever driven. The steering, throttle response and brakes are all amazing. The suspension is extremely rough, even compared to cars like the F-type. However the driving experience makes the bumpy ride worth it. It has a great interior with a good sized trunk. The back seats are small, but much larger than a LC500. If youre in the market for a fast and fun car definitely pick one up. Its an amazing car with an amazing hand-built V8 that will last. Id definitely take a C63 coupe over a F-type, DB11, Hellcat, M4, M8, Gt350 and almost every car in the segment. (Below the Lc500 though) Overall a great car you should pick up if its in your budget.

The Mercedes Benz C Coupe sets itself aside from its sedan version. In fact, despite having the same nameplate, and badging, it is an entirely different car. Kudos to the sedan, no doubt, but the Coupe just epitomizes the right balance between pure luxury and pure sport. It is pleasant to find how well it does both in equal parts. Beautifully styled inside and out, it offers upgrades as standard that are options with the sedan. Drives enthusiastically, precisely, and comfortably. This model year is where the depreciation has its full effect and is quite affordable. It puts a smile on my face just by gazing at it, let alone what it does when I get behind the wheel.

Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
You get a compact luxury sedan that buyers consistently praise for powerful performance, stylish design, and luxurious features. The overview also points to its appeal as an upscale, satisfying introduction to Mercedes-Benz’s German luxury sedans, while the user feedback highlights responsiveness and comfort as recurring positives.
For you, that means this model makes the most sense if you want a premium-feeling daily driver that balances comfort and image with engaging road manners. 37.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback repeatedly points to the car feeling dependable in everyday use, with owners valuing its comfort, responsiveness, and overall satisfying ownership experience. The expert road test also describes the C-Class as a car that delivers a strong blend of comfort and performance, which supports the idea that it can be a car you can count on for regular driving.
The cost-effectiveness notes also reinforce that it does many things right for the segment, even if ownership can become expensive once options and repairs enter the picture. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that maintenance and repair costs can be high, so a careful service-history check matters.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The cabin and exterior presentation can vary meaningfully between the more basic and more upscale versions, with the Luxury package bringing a thinner upright chrome grille and hood ornament, while the Sport package adds a more aggressive look. You should pay attention to whether the car has the features and finish you expect, because the base setup is not as richly equipped as the better-specified versions.
- Powertrain: You’re mainly looking at a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission. The expert notes that the car feels strong and composed, but also that it is not as quick or satisfying as the previous V6-powered version.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes rear side thorax-level airbags, stability control that can compensate for crosswinds, forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, an attention monitor, and brake-drying functionality in wet weather. Optional features include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus.
- Infotainment: The standard setup uses a 7-inch central screen with Bluetooth, HD Radio, and two USB ports. The upgraded system adds an 8.4-inch screen and navigation, and the COMAND interface includes an integrated owner’s manual, animations for vehicle controls, and customised shortcuts.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the C300 4Matic at 10.1 L/100 km in the city, 7.8 L/100 km on the highway, and 9.1 L/100 km combined. In testing, the car averaged a calculated 10.2 L/100 km over more than 1,000 kilometres.
Which 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class trim should I buy?
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is offered in 1 trim level: C300 4Matic.
Here's the short version:
The C300 4Matic is the one to focus on because it’s the core Canadian model and the one most dealers stocked. It gives you the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, all-wheel drive, and the balanced driving character that defines this generation. If you want the best-value path into the model, this is the trim to target, especially if you find one with the features you care about already fitted.
The safety package is strong across the model, with standard forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, rear side thorax-level airbags, and an attention monitor.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 37.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 315 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.46% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $23,090 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class's resale value?
The current average of $23,315 CAD sits slightly below last year's $27,255 CAD.
That price drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the car well maintained, you may be better positioned than someone who paid closer to the earlier average.
The current trend also means future sellers may need to be more realistic on asking price, especially if comparable listings remain plentiful. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class safe?
The 2017 C-Class earns five-star ratings from NHTSA and Top Safety Pick+ recognition from IIHS.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Mercedes includes a broad standard safety suite here: rear side thorax-level airbags, stability control that can help counter crosswinds, forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, an attention monitor, and brake-drying functionality in wet weather. Optional safety features include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus.
Should I buy a 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 37.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.46% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 model keeps the C-Class formula intact with strong comfort, performance, and safety, while offering a more favourable used-market price than newer examples.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of value and the classic C-Class mix of luxury, comfort, and performance, the 2017 is the smart place to start. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can also use the softer pricing to negotiate harder and focus on the cleanest, best-maintained example rather than stretching for a newer year.
