CarGurus Analysis: 2017 BMW X3
Summary
With 149 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,385 CAD, 32.2% of 2017 BMW X3 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 BMW X3 4.69 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW X3 stands out as a compact luxury SUV that puts driving enjoyment at the centre of the experience. It was praised for sharp handling and a premium feel, while still offering the practicality many buyers want from an SUV. It also had a spacious cabin for its size and plenty of trunk space, making it a sensible choice for everyday use without giving up BMW’s sporty character.
What makes this generation especially appealing is the way it combines comfort, performance, and technology. The X3’s interior was upgraded for better comfort, and its turbocharged engines brought extra power along with better fuel economy. In Canada, xDrive all-wheel drive was standard throughout the second generation, and a diesel version was available in 2017. Owners also tended to value the luxurious interior, smooth ride, and practical features.
There are a few drawbacks to keep in mind. The 2017 BMW X3 had a reputation for higher maintenance and repair costs, and common issues included problems with the automatic transmission and oil leaks. Some owners also felt it lacked heated seats in certain models and the advanced safety technology they expected in a premium vehicle.

How much does the 2017 BMW X3 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,326 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $16,326 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $17,969 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,959 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.09% |
Prices have softened 9.09% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 146 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of choice in the used market.
Is the 2017 BMW X3 a good car?
Yes — the 2017 BMW X3 earns a 4.69/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the luxurious interior, smooth ride, sporty performance, cabin comfort, and practical features. That lines up well with its role as a compact luxury SUV that balances everyday usefulness with driving enjoyment. With 27.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive offer.
Is the 2017 BMW X3 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.69/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that many people find dependable in day-to-day use, especially when it comes to comfort, performance, and overall ownership experience. At the same time, the model’s reputation for higher maintenance and repair costs means you should budget carefully and inspect any used example closely. For long-term ownership, the biggest risk is that repair expenses can add up faster than they would on a less premium SUV.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW X3?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy without expecting deep discounts on every listing.
- Deal availability: 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 146 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.09% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $16,326 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 BMW X3's resale value?
The current average of $16,326 CAD sits slightly below last year's $17,959 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit upside if you plan to sell soon. If you own one for a few years, resale value will depend heavily on condition, maintenance history, and how well the vehicle has been cared for. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.69/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 BMW X3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.09% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.69/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 BMW X3 makes the most sense if you want a well-liked compact luxury SUV with strong owner approval and a softer price than it had a year ago. If you are more price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on whichever one gives you the best combination of condition, mileage, and asking price.
