CarGurus Analysis: 2017 BMW X3
Summary
With 73 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,999 CAD, 35.6% of 2017 BMW X3 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 BMW X3 4.69 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW X3 stands out as a compact luxury SUV that puts driving enjoyment at the centre of the experience. It was praised for sharp handling and a premium feel, while still offering the practicality many buyers want from an SUV. It also had a spacious cabin for its size and plenty of trunk space, making it a sensible choice for everyday use without giving up BMW’s sporty character.
What makes this generation especially appealing is the way it combines comfort, performance, and technology. The X3’s interior was upgraded for better comfort, and its turbocharged engines brought extra power along with better fuel economy. In Canada, xDrive all-wheel drive was standard throughout the second generation, and a diesel version was available in 2017. Owners also tended to value the luxurious interior, smooth ride, and practical features.
There are a few drawbacks to keep in mind. The 2017 BMW X3 had a reputation for higher maintenance and repair costs, and common issues included problems with the automatic transmission and oil leaks. Some owners also felt it lacked heated seats in certain models and the advanced safety technology they expected in a premium vehicle.

Owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free experience for many shoppers, especially when it comes to the vehicle’s comfort and everyday usability. That said, used buyers should still budget carefully for long-term ownership, since premium SUVs can carry higher repair exposure as they age.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW X3?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare listings closely.
- Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 149 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.17% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $16,154 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 BMW X3's resale value?
The current average of $16,154 CAD sits slightly below last year's $17,591 CAD.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the X3 more attractive to used buyers today. For a future seller, it also means you may need to price competitively if you want to move the vehicle quickly. The good news is that the model’s strong owner satisfaction can help support demand when it’s time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.69/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 BMW X3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.17% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.69/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 BMW X3 makes sense if you want a well-liked compact luxury SUV with strong owner approval and a softer price than it had a year ago. If you’re more price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby model years and focus on the best-maintained example rather than the newest badge.
