CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Hyundai Elantra

Summary
With 135 currently listed for sale near Toronto, ON and an average price of $8,528 CAD, 28.9% of 2016 Hyundai Elantras for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Hyundai Elantra 4.7 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Hyundai Elantra stands out as part of the fifth-generation redesign that first turned heads for the 2011 model year. Its styling was a major part of the appeal, with flowing bodywork and an attractive fastback silhouette that helped the car feel more distinctive than many compact sedans. Hyundai also gave this generation the widest range of body styles in the Elantra’s history, which broadened its appeal for shoppers who wanted something practical but not plain.
For 2016, the Elantra’s standard engine was a 148-horsepower, 1.8-litre four-cylinder paired with a manual or automatic transmission. Hyundai had added a more powerful 2.0-litre four-cylinder in 2014, and that engine made 173 hp. Fuel economy ranged from 7.4 to 9.1 L/100 km combined, and the car earned good marks for safety, though it did not collect as many IIHS “Top Safety Pick” awards as the sixth generation that followed. The generation’s reliability record was mixed, with some sources rating it average and others placing it among the weakest Elantra generations since 2000.
As a used buy, the 2016 Elantra can still make sense because it is inexpensive and offers a lot of car for the money. It is also worth noting that some owners praise its comfort, smooth ride, reliability, and fuel economy. On the downside, complaints about electrical and HVAC systems, suspensions, engines, brakes, and overall build quality were especially common for 2012 and 2013 models, and those years were also among the most theft-vulnerable Elantras.

We loved our Elantra! Great ride, great on gas and it was put to the ULTIMATE TEST when during a downpour a tractor trailer flew by and swerved into our lane causing us to hydroplane across 3 lanes then down an embankment where we flipped on our side and finally came to a stop when we hit a tree line. Climbed out the top through the passenger window and walked away with only a few bumps and bruises. The rescuers, police and tow truck guys all said wow, that car saved your lives!

I love the Hyndai Elantra. It is a very solid, good steering, roomy, reliable and sporty looking vehicle. I believe it is comparable to a Honda Civic or Chevy Cruze.

I bought the 2016 GL model late 2015 I have been very impressed - a wider body than the Ford Focus i owned, great features, cruise even with a Manual, AC electric windows and locks, blutooth, very comfortable and smooth quiet engine. very sharp looking and excellent mileage. my vehicle now has 170,000 kms and runs like new, no issues mechanically at all just oil changes and filters and brakes which I did myself - parts very easy to obtain online line rotors etc.

2016 Hyundai Elantra Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2016 Hyundai Elantra prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2016 Hyundai Elantra cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $8,598 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $8,598 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $9,674 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $9,381 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.35% |
Prices have softened 8.35% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 296 listings available, which suggests a decent amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Hyundai Elantra earns a 4.7/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers most often praise its comfort, reliability, excellent fuel economy, smooth ride, and attractive design. For you, that makes it a sensible fit if you want a practical compact sedan that still feels a bit more distinctive than plain commuter transportation. With 28.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful value in the market.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback highlights reliability, and drivers also describe the car as dependable and comfortable for everyday use. That said, used-car reliability always depends on maintenance history, so your long-term ownership risk is lower when you choose a well-kept example with clear service records.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Hyundai Elantra?
The market looks moderately favourable if you are a selective buyer who is willing to compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 296 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.35% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $8,598 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $8,598 CAD sits slightly below last year's $9,381 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the model is currently more buyer-friendly than seller-friendly, which can affect future resale expectations if you plan to own it for only a short time. If prices remain stable, a well-kept example should still appeal to budget-conscious shoppers looking for a comfortable, efficient compact sedan. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.35% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $10,236 CAD, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $8,598 CAD average.
- It adds a more polished redesign with stronger technology and safety focus.
The bottom line: Choose the 2016 if your priority is value and you want a well-liked compact sedan at a lower entry price. If you can stretch your budget, the 2017 is the better pick for shoppers who want a newer-feeling cabin and more advanced features; otherwise, the 2016 remains the smarter buy for price-sensitive buyers.
