TDI engines can burn biodiesel, which is a renewable resource, and is relatively carbon neutral. The engine themselves lasts 25,000 hours...which at 40 mph at 50 % load is equal to more than a million miles. Maintenance is more involved...but easy enough for one to do. I get about 40 mpg in city, and 54 mpg on freeway.

This diesel fueled car gets great mileage for driving to work and on road trips. With regular maintenance, we have had no problems for the past 70k miles that we have owned it.

performance-slow, but handles decent enough. build quailty-good, few electrical issues and the cupholders block the stereo Appearance- I think it's very classy Cost of ownership-not that bad Fun factor- not too fun, but feels good getting 45 mpg on the highway and 30 when you drive hard

This is an amazing little car. Great reliable german built 1.9 litre turbo diesel injection. SAVE on gas! I get up to 1000 km per tank - easy. 5 speed manual transmission makes it fun to drive as it accelerates quite quickly. Never drove a car which handled so nicely. VERY STURDY. 1 accident - person ran into the front of this car with thier vehicle, hardly made a dent. Equipped with leather interior, heated seats, power sunroof, audio controls on stearing column, heated mirrors, side airbags... sooo many options included in the GLS model. I'd say a great little taste of luxury for your price.
