(60 reviews)It gets great mileage even when you put your foot to the floor. The build of the car is quite well since it is 12+ years old and still looks and drives brand new. Appearance to some may be a box but it is one of the safest cars in the world. The cost of ownership in the beginning was high but if you get the main issues completed early you won't have much to worry about. Main issue is timing belt and associated parts, since they can including labor run you around $1700. Fun factor is pretty high up there since you have a car that looks inconspicuous but can still do at least 130 mph stock.
The 1996 Volvo 850 Wagon Platinum Edition is a all around great car. It comes with a peppy inline 5, 2.3 liter engine turbocharged to 225 bhp. It could use a bit more power but it still does well. The 850 is Volvo's segue in to the luxury and performance niche and they have done quite well. This particular version seems to look even better with age with it's Persus wheels and platinum white paint job that changes colors day or night. The interior isn't anything too flashy but it makes sense, and it looks clean and classic without that gaudiness many 90's cars have. There's ample room in the back too. But that's not what Volvo is known for, is it? Volvo is known for safety. The 850 feels solid and safe to drive. Like the driver could make a mistake and the car would handle it. It's safety is even made known around the car with imprints, stickers, and the awkwardness of climbing in and out of the back seat. (Passengers sit in a cage, basically). When you start the car, red "fasten seat belt" lights located near the map lamps illuminate much like in an airplane. Like most European cars, the Swedish 850 is a bit more costly to maintain, (though, a bit less than it's German counterparts). Maintenance is key, or an owner may face a bit more costly repairs down the road. But Volvos are known for lasting a long time. The 850 is no different. Take care of it, and it will take care of you. The brass tacks are that it's not for everyone. If you want more reliability and fuel efficiency, get a Honda, if you want more luxury, get a BMW or a Benz. If you want better looks, get an Alfa. If you want a car that has a bit of soul and you know will last you a long time, find one of these gems. The Volvo 850 Platinum Wagon.
Bought car used and abused (unfortunately) put new spark plugs and K&N air filter in it. runs much much better. suprisingly quick for it's weight and power. built like a tank (Volvo of course) exteriors fair, some body work is gonna need to be done. especially some nice wheels good gas mileage (went to Callahan and back on about 3-4 gallons) i like driving it, seeing as it's a 5-speed manual bought it for approx 1600 w/ 112,000 mls
Only things I have to do to this car have been: New battery (replace old battery) New brakes (replace old brakes) New tires (replace old tires) Oil Change New alternator New Windshield Wipers Other than that NOTHING else, not back for a twelve year old car no? -post pictures later :) -
At first glance I didnt like the looks at all of my car. I tought it was some ugly saftey box. But after haveing it for a few years I enjoy the Volvo. It has a comfy leather interior. A 5 banger that puts out enough to get up to speed and pass on the highway. The sport mode is fun as well gives it a bit more pick up. It preforms great in the winter if the roads are a bit slick with the winter mode button on. A spacious back seat and plenty of room in the trunk to put more besides my current 2 10" subs. Also the stock speakers are damn good sounding in my opinon. Gas mileage is alright I get about 18 city and 20-22 Highway. The steering wheel feels very well grounded and connected with the wheels not numb. The sunroofs nice but broke after a couple of months being electronic and its a 14 year old car, no big suprise. The cabin noise isnt too bad on the highway theres some wind noise nothing over bearing though and the engines not too loud. The window swiches are in a weird place though for the front seats there both in the center console. And also has only 2 non ajustable cup holders, wish it had more.
