3.7 Overall rating
(12 reviews)Mine was the high tech (for 89) 2.2 intercooled 5 speed GTC. This car does everything well and has an awesome drivetrain. Mine was well modded and made about 280hp (est. crank rating) on the stock GarretT2 at its peak. I kick myself for selling this car more than anything. Easily a mid 13 sec car with a lot of potential.
There are a few things that I don't like about this car. 1. The interior looks dated by today's standards where the 1990 interior looks MUCH better. 2. It's FWD. 3. Solid rear axle. 4. SOHC I love everything else about this car. It's the perfect sleeper. I still find the exterior styling beautiful. For what it is it's a great car.
Nice acceleration (2.5L Turbo) Automatic convertible Manual gearbox Gas inexpensive (~7.8L / 100km) Awesome backlights
Not a bad old thing really, Fuel consumption is high, but no other complaints so far. For a £400 Twenty one year old car, it's impressive that everything still works (more or less). The drive is good, a few odd noises here and there. Handling is something to get used to at best, especially when cornering (now I know why American roads are straight) But once you get used to it, it's a problem free drive. Performance. The Shelby developed K series 2.2 turbo with the Holley carb' give the GTC all it needs to hold it's own against most modern cars in it's class (boy racer / coupe / drive it like I stole it) , it pulls and pulls and pulls... I bend the needle at 125Mph, where the speedo runs out, the acceleration does not. Individuality. You won't see many the same wherever you go. Seems the K engined GTC (2-door coupe) is something of a rarity in the UK but most of what I say here covers the cabrio as well. Looks... Opinion is divided, it's a love it or hate it car. Is this car fun to drive... OHHH YES !!! *** RELIABILITY UPDATE*** Just an FYI for potential buyers of a LeBaron... If it's a 5 speed manual transmission, be VERY picky about gearbox noise. Current bill for gearbox repairs on this 1989 GTC... £1700 and rising. (has been off the road for nearly 5 months waiting for parts) If you're not a dedicated owner/lover of this particular vehicle with manual trans'.....I wholeheartedly recommend you go for the automatic.
In the summer time it's fun to have due to the convertible top and the turbo. In the winter, it sucks. Great for a first car and I still drive it when I come back home, but only if its sunny out.
