Not sure about the year, I only had it for two years and it was one of those cars you'll never get attached to. It did its job I suppose, but boy was it ugly, A Golf with a trunk attached as after thought. Not VW's finest, that's for sure.

Performance: It's a diesel, what performance? Handles like its on rails. Build: tons of squeaks and rattles, but 30 years and 900k kms its doing alright. Appearance: Love the styling of early 80's Germans Cost of ownership: Stupid cheap repairs, do all the work myself. 50mpg Fun Factor: Hell yes its fun to drive, its a DIESEL!

I work in the petroleum industry in Canada and take this car off road quite a bit down logging traiis. I now own a pickup for work, but; this car has endured so much for rough roads and I received it quite used and it still holds. The mechanical diesel engine is easy to repair and runs like a top, not necessarily good for racing, but INCREDIBLY economical on fuel and the engine is reliable. The only quandary about the car's mechanical system is the cable breaks, I had a couple of issues with the break line being tight, they still functioned, but gave fair warning of any potential failures. The door handles feel a bit cheap and same with some of the interior.
