(12 reviews)As most folks would agree the car was fun to drive and cornered flat. OTOH I was rear ended not once, not twice BUT THREE TIMES during four years of ownership...............but I will say its one of a few cars that I later sold for essentially what i paid for it. (The others were a Corvette and an RX-7)
The car was built in September of 1973 and originally sold in Erie, PA at the now out-of- business Presque Isle Porsche in January of 1974. It has remained in the city throughout its life. The car has been nearly fully restored over the course of the last several years and has had a few upgrades. They include: Engine: - Complete engine rebuild w/ new rings, bearings, pushrods and lifters - 2.1 L. 'big bore' jugs and pistons - Dual Weber 40 IDF 2-barrel carbs w/ 'velocity stacks' and free-flow air filters - Carb -tuned cam - MSD electronic ignition - Ported/polished cylinder heads with new valve guides - Bursch exhaust and stainless steel heat exchangers - Oil sump add-on - High pressure oil pump - Lightened and ballanced flywheel - Runs with Mobil-1 15-W 50 synthetic oil Suspension/Brakes/Chassis: - Factory installed optional anti-sway bars - Falken 195/65 R15 sport tires - Powder coated original Mahle magnesium wheels - Longitudinal strengthening/stiffening pannels - Lowered front and rear suspension Exterior: - Chrome front and rear bumpers - Factory Hella fog lights - Factory fiberglass front air-dam - Repained to original silver paint code - Factory right side rearview mirror Interior: - New carpeting - Re-upholstered seat side-bolsters - New back-pad - Under dashboard curtesey lights - VDO under dash gauge cluster (oil temp, oil pressure, volts) - Vintage Blaupunkt radio from '73 Audi
Handles like a Dream, and most fun to work on! This thing eats corners for breakfast. The engine can be pulled in about an hour, and lots of aftermarket parts and upgrades are available (has a great enthusiast's support network). But, it's a money pit as far as maintenance goes. The engine parts are standard VW (unless you have the Porsche 6-cyl.), so that stuff is cheap, but everything else is vintage porsche!
Best race street car for the money, nothing handles better, period. Beats everything in autoX and on tight circuits. Could use a few more hp.
The one Porsche I own that always gets smiles and waves, never middle fingers. I feel like I should wear gloves and a driving cap when I drive it, but then I'd probably get that middle finger, and well-deserved... It is in very nice condition, not a garage queen, though I need to drive it more. And with A/C that actually keeps you cool, it's kind of unique for 914s...
