2011 Ford escape

My car all of a sudden after stopping at a red light could
hardly go. Put accelerator all the way to floor wouldn’t go
any faster then 10 mph. Only 1 min from home but took
us over 5 min and when we did get home the car was
extremely hot to touch but the gage  in car did not show
engine hot at all. Checked all fluids they were ok what
could have caused this to happen?
