Overheating

Asked by Zachary Sep 20, 2017 at 07:25 PM about the 1996 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie SLT Club Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1996 dodge ram slt laramie club cab 5.9l
v8 magnum, I was trying to get home at 1am I was
an hour away and the water pump gasket went out
the thermostat gauge was maxed out all the way
home the next day replaced the thermostat and the
water pump and flushed the system and it
continues to over heat but sometime it will get hot
and make a flushing sound somewhere behind the
dash, and the temp will go back down, but it
repeats, I would greatly appreciate some pointers,
because I miss driving the truck, and my
grandfather is done messing with it and is turning
it over to me, so I don't have to see it go! Well
appreciated, thank you guys!

It reads like you drove it for some time after it was overheating? That may well have blown the head gasket, and the cause for continued overheating. You'll need a compression test to know for sure. Block Tester can also detect traces of hydrocarbons in the coolant, another sign of a blown gasket.
