Need to check the transmission fluid. May be low. Then it should be looked at to make sure everything is ok. You may need some help on checking the fluid level as most of these do not have a dip stick, but a plug in the trany to check the level. Not sure on the 2006.

Get it to a mechanic or dealer asap or you may need to replace the tranny. That's what happened in my 09 Malibu. Turns out there's an electronic disconnect to the transmission causing the transmission to not shift correctly. Good luck.
