Clutch

You probably just destroyed your clutch I only say this because from 65 dropping it into third meant you were trying to get on it and if you can put the shifter into any gear without depressing the clutch your clutch is gone I actually just dealt with this at work today in a Hyundai Accent with only 3k miles but have someone look at your slave cylinder while you press the clutch pedal down if that's not moving your in luck and need to replace your slave cylinder and is usually a generally simple task.

But ou saying you still have pedal tells me your clutch is burnt up, it kinda operates like disk brakes, imagine your flywheel rotating slow in 5th at 65 when you go to third gear your engine will jump to I'm guessing 4 grand or more when the clutch is pressed in the fly wheel is freely rotating very fast and then when you release the pedal the pressure plate will have extreme friction and can shred, same concept of sitting at a stop reving up to 3 grand or more and dumping the clutch that's the easiest way to burn one up.
I would say that you are probably right I have pretty much formed that opinion myself too but I'm not familiar with these systems and what really throws me is that when I downshift it from fifth gear to 3rd I felt nothing, it was like it didn't engage at all and was like I just missed the gear and went into neutral and the RPM's shot up to about 6900 RPMs, then after that it was neutral in every gear ???
