In my 2002 Durango I need to have a programmed key in the truck to be able to programme my self if not you need to take it to the Dealer. The procedure is in the owners manual and is done be cycling the key in the swiss a number of times, don´t remember how many, and you have limited time to do so.

the only thing you can do is go to the dealer and get a laser cut key for the progamer to update with that specific key

i dont know what year your durango is if its newer like 05-present, then yes you do need a new key because the newer trucks have chips in the keys that use a radio signal to identify with the various vehicle computers, if some thing got scrambled then yes thats your problem. the older vehicles any thing really before 05 your issue is prolly in your ignition module some where because these keys arent chipped

My 2002 has a chip in it and it can be programmed in my truck as long as I have another key that is programmed in it. But I dont know what year we are talking about here.
