If it is carbureted clean with spray carburetor cleaner use the whole can and if fuel injected clean throttle with throttle body cleaner and and some fuel injector cleaner to gas tank. Also change fuel filter if have not done so in a while.

my 2001 ford focus would start and idle in park or neutral, but as soon as I put in rev or drive it died immediately. I did a number of things, but nothing helped until I got a new ECU. Before buying an ECU check to see if the existing ECU is reading the correct voltage at the ECU pin numbers for the transmission solenoids. Junk it and buy a Toyota! Also check vacuum lines.
