Towing Capacity

Asked by Carmen Oct 28, 2016 at 07:49 AM about the GMC Sierra 1500

Question type: General

I own a 1985 GMC Sierra 1500, long bed with about
55,000 original miles and original equipment. I want
to tow a travel trailer that says G?GW 5500.  I think I
may need a hitch installed to the housing.  Will ithat
work? Can I do it without hurting my old gem? I am
an older lady that does not know much about cars.
Thank you for your help.

I don't know what engine you have but it should be able to tow a trailer that weighs 5,500 pounds. If you don't have a trailer hitch on the truck I would recommend having a frame mounted hitch installed rather than putting a ball on the bumper. Frame mounted hitches are not that expensive and any good mechanic or trailer seller can install one for you. Hopefully your trailer has brakes and if so you will have to verify that your truck has the correct connection and you will also need to have a trailer brake controller installed.

Thank you do very much. I am restoring a 1975 travel trailer that was abandoned in my property when I purchased it. I don't know if these old trailers would have brakes. I am trying to locate an owners manual and schematics
