How do I know if it is the AC compressor or fan causing AC/Heater to intermittently stop working?

Asked by rabuster May 20, 2015 at 10:38 PM about the 2003 Buick Century Sedan FWD

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

The air conditioner/heater of my 2003 Buick Century (156,000 miles) periodically stops
working for no obvious reason and can begin working again, also without any obvious
cause. I took the car to my local Firestone and was told it is the ac compressor and the
charge for fixing it is $1100. I don't think my car is even worth that much. Also, would
the compressor affect the heater too? My husband thinks it is a problem with the fan,
possibly a short. What do you think?

I recommend calling 3 garages for estimates near you to hear what each says. Because its going off when heating , thats not the cool air conditioning system. Possible loose wire under dash or fan wearing or something hitting its blades. Call another firestone?
