Reviews Summary

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid SUV’s popularity is understandable, given the midsize, three-row crossover's impressive fuel economy rating. However, generally speaking, the 2023 Toyota Highlander is not what it should be, and specifically, the Highlander Hybrid doesn’t meet efficiency expectations. Unfortunately, this Toyota faces few rivals. But the Kia Sorento Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid models are worthy alternatives.

Reviews Summary

We reviewed the GLC SUV when it was all-new for the 2023 model year and available with only one powertrain. AMG variants have rejoined the GLC 300 for 2024, and the GLC Coupe, which was a carryover last year, now catches up with the redesigned GLC SUV. For the purposes of this review, we’ve focused our attention on the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43, which we spent a week putting through its paces on our home turf.

Verdict: We suspect the AMG-tuned GLC misses the mark on what most shoppers are looking for in a luxury crossover, but for the right driver, it may very well prove worth the wait. For everyone else, the GLC 300 has everything we feel we have a right to hope for from a sub-$60k Mercedes-Benz.

2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

4/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

8/10

The 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid was priced at just over $50,000 for the base Hybrid LE, with the Limited trim reaching $61,800 in Canada. It featured minimal appearance changes, with a new Cypress Green paint colour being the most notable update. The design was described as over-styled, with exaggerated forms and a lack of subtlety both inside and out. The interior was criticized for its mismatched textures, reflections, and a lack of quality in materials and controls. Despite these drawbacks, the Highlander Hybrid was noted for its quiet ride on the road.

In contrast, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC maintained a familiar design with subtle updates, such as repositioned door handles and new taillights. The GLC's interior was described as sumptuous, with a focus on luxury and gadgetry. The test vehicle featured two-tone leather upholstery and an optional wood-and-metal dash treatment. The GLC's cabin was noted for its class-leading technology and comfort, appealing to those who appreciate a high-tech and luxurious driving experience.

Performance

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

The 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid combined a 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine with electric motor-generators, producing 243 horsepower. It offered standard all-wheel drive and a focus on fuel economy, with a Predictive Efficient Drive system. However, the Highlander Hybrid's performance was described as lacklustre, with limited high-speed passing power and a soft suspension that made for a less engaging driving experience. It was best suited for city and suburban driving, prioritizing reliability and safety over excitement.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC 43 featured a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine from AMG, delivering 416 horsepower. It outperformed the base GLC 300, which offered 255 horsepower. The GLC 43's AMG Speedshift MCT 9-speed transmission provided faster shifts, enhancing performance driving. However, the performance suspension and rougher shifts made it less suitable for daily commuting. Enthusiasts would appreciate the sporty nature and four-wheel steering, but it was not recommended for those seeking a comfortable luxury crossover for everyday use.

Form and function

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

The 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid accommodated seven or eight passengers, with most models featuring second-row captain’s chairs. The third-row seat was best for occasional use, and the interior offered standard three-zone climate control and heated front seats. The test vehicle included additional features like a heated steering wheel and ventilated front seats. Cargo space was generous, with up to 2,387 litres available when the second-row seats were folded. However, the interior design and storage solutions were criticized for being unnecessarily complex and lacking in quality.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC's cabin was driver-focused, with controls angled toward the driver. Standard features included heated front seats with memory functions, while ventilation and heated rear seats were optional. The GLC SUV offered 620 litres of cargo space, expanding to 1,680 litres with the rear seats folded. The GLC Coupe provided less cargo space but maintained a hatchback-like configuration for added versatility. The interior was noted for its convenience features, such as power-folding rear seats.

Technology

2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

8/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

8/10

The 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid introduced new technology, including a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation display and Toyota Audio Multimedia infotainment systems. The Limited trim featured a 12.3-inch touchscreen with over-the-air updates, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a JBL sound system. The Drive Connect service plan offered additional features like natural voice recognition and cloud-based navigation. While the technology was generally easy to use, the graphics could have been bolder for better visibility.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC featured an 11.9-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen running the third-generation MBUX infotainment system. It included a responsive voice command system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and available features like a Burmester 3D surround sound system and augmented reality navigation. The GLC's technology was praised for its functionality and user-friendliness, enhancing the overall driving experience.

The 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid came equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+, offering a comprehensive suite of advanced driving assistance systems. It included adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and more. The Highlander Hybrid received excellent crash-test ratings from both the IIHS and NHTSA, ensuring peace of mind for safety-conscious buyers.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS, with its standard front crash-prevention system rated as "Acceptable." Standard safety features included active brake assist, blind-spot monitoring, and Pre-Safe, which prepared the vehicle for an imminent collision. While some advanced driver-assistance systems were optional, the GLC's safety features were comprehensive and effective.
