2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC Reviews Summary

We reviewed the GLC SUV when it was all-new for the 2023 model year–and available with only one powertrain. AMG variants have rejoined the GLC 300 for 2024, and the GLC Coupe, which was a carryover last year, now catches up with the redesigned GLC SUV. For the purposes of this review, we’ve focused our attention on the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43, which we spent a week putting through its paces on our home turf.

Verdict: We suspect the AMG-tuned GLC misses the mark on what most shoppers are looking for in a luxury crossover, but for the right driver, it may very well prove worth the wait. For everyone else, the GLC 300 has everything we feel we have a right to hope for from a sub-$50k Mercedes-Benz.

2024 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

Though Mazda hasn’t redesigned its popular compact crossover SUV since 2017, a program of continuous refinement makes the 2024 CX-5 better than ever. It might even be too good. It has shared showroom space with the similarly sized Mazda CX-50 model since last year but continues to outsell its newer and slightly more expensive sibling. As it turns out, there are numerous reasons for that.

Verdict: Mazda positions the CX-5 as an SUV for active urbanites, and it serves perfectly in its role. Stylish design, taut dimensions, excellent outward visibility, a comfortable cabin, commendable quality, and impressive safety ratings make it a great choice. Plus, the 2024 Mazda CX-5 is genuinely enjoyable to drive.

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

8/10

2024 Mazda CX-5

9/10

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC maintained a familiar aesthetic, with subtle updates that kept its loyal fanbase content. The redesign featured new taillights and repositioned door handles, while the headlights adopted a more aggressive look. The rear end saw a significant update with a trim piece connecting the taillights and a less chrome-heavy design. The GLC Coupe retained its distinctive fastback roofline, and the grille differentiated the AMG models from the GLC 300 with vertical bars reminiscent of a pinstriped uniform. Inside, the GLC exuded luxury with its two-tone leather upholstery and wood-and-metal dash treatment, complemented by an array of screens, buttons, and ambient lighting, making it a gadget-heavy yet sumptuous interior.

In contrast, the 2024 Mazda CX-5 retained its classic design from 2017, with minor updates that kept it modern and appealing. The new Carbon Turbo trim introduced Zircon Sand paint and exclusive Terracotta leather seats, adding a touch of exclusivity. The CX-5's design was enhanced by gloss-black exterior detailing, and the interior featured upgraded materials and technology. Despite its compact size, the CX-5 offered a comfortable and upscale experience, with supportive seats and a well-designed cabin that rivaled luxury brands. The CX-5's interior space was snug but comfortable for four adults, and its cargo capacity was competitive within its segment.

Performance

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

2024 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC 43 was powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, producing an impressive 416 horsepower, surpassing the previous generation's V6. This engine was supported by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, enhancing its performance. The GLC 300, on the other hand, offered 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, which, while respectable, paled in comparison to the AMG variant. The GLC 300 was available in rear-wheel drive, with an optional 4Matic all-wheel drive, while the AMG GLC 43 came standard with 4Matic AWD. Both models featured a nine-speed automatic transmission, with the AMG version offering faster shifts and improved torque handling. The GLC's performance suspension provided a sporty driving experience, though it might not suit those seeking a comfortable commuter vehicle.

The 2024 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Turbo delivered 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque on premium gas, with slightly reduced figures on regular gas. The turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine offered a smooth and rewarding driving experience when driven with a steady foot. However, its fuel efficiency was less impressive, with a combined rating of 24 mpg. The CX-5's suspension was re-tuned for a smoother ride, and its frame was stiffened for responsive handling. Standard all-wheel drive and G-Vectoring Control Plus technology enhanced its cornering capabilities. The CX-5 excelled in various driving conditions, from city streets to twisty mountain roads, and offered a quiet and connected ride.

Form and function

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC's cabin was designed with a driver-focused layout, featuring a center touchscreen and climate controls angled towards the driver. The interior was adorned with buttons, particularly in AMG models, where the steering wheel had additional controls. Standard features included heated front seats with memory functions, with optional front-seat ventilation and heated rear seats. The GLC SUV offered 21.9 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 59.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The GLC Coupe, with its sloping roofline, provided 17.6 cubic feet of cargo space, increasing to 52.6 cubic feet when the rear seats were down.

The 2024 Mazda CX-5 offered standard heated front seats, redesigned for comfort and support. The driver's seat featured six-way power adjustment, while passengers could manually adjust seat height. Leather upholstery was standard on most trims, with premium Nappa leather available on the top-tier model. The CX-5's interior was snug but comfortable for four adults, with supportive rear seats and thoughtful design elements. The cabin's quality and design elevated it above most mass-market rivals, and storage space was adequate, though the cupholders were somewhat awkward. The CX-5 provided 30 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 59.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC featured a prominent 11.9-inch touchscreen running the third-generation MBUX infotainment system, known for its responsive voice command capabilities. Standard features included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with additional options like navigation, a 15-speaker Burmester sound system, and a head-up display available on higher trims. The GLC also offered a "Transparent Hood" feature for off-road driving and an Advanced USB package for increased connectivity.

The 2024 Mazda CX-5 took a different approach, favoring traditional switchgear over touchscreens to reduce driver distraction. However, it allowed touchscreen operation for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which were available wirelessly on several trims. The 10.25-inch display was navigated using a center console knob, with quick access buttons for essential functions. Mazda Connected Services provided remote engine starting, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and more. The Carbon Turbo trim featured a 10-speaker Bose sound system, enhancing the premium feel of the interior.

Optional advanced driver-assistance systems were available through the Driver Assistance Package, adding features like adaptive cruise control and active lane-keeping assist.

The 2024 Mazda CX-5 came equipped with a comprehensive suite of advanced driving assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and lane-keeping assist. Higher trims offered additional safety features like adaptive headlights, traffic sign recognition, and a driver monitoring system. The CX-5 had previously received a Top Safety Pick designation from the IIHS and earned five-star ratings from the NHTSA, except for a four-star rollover resistance rating.
