2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year (launched in 2023) keeps the popular Mercedes sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals, which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 3 centimetres to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive (AWD) is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent on a test drive of the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

2023 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

The Jeep Wrangler’s roots go all the way back to World War II and the Willys-Overland company. Fast-forward some 60 years or so and we have the iconic Jeep Wrangler JL, one of the last body-on-frame SUVs left for folks who prioritize off-road capability over creature comforts.

Every Wrangler comes with solid front and rear axles and a five-link suspension system. However, some popular trim levels, like the Wrangler Sport, Wrangler Willys Sport, and Wrangler Sahara, don’t get locking differentials or meaty tires, so choose your Wrangler carefully.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

2023 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE received a subtle exterior update that might have gone unnoticed by many. The changes were minor, with the most noticeable being the clever Mercedes star logos on the front grille and slight modifications to the headlights and taillights. The GLE 450e test model, finished in Twilight Blue metallic and equipped with 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels, presented a sophisticated appearance. Inside, the GLE 450e exuded luxury with its Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, complemented by natural grain brown walnut trim. Mercedes offered a wide range of interior colour choices and trims, ensuring a high-quality cabin experience.

In contrast, the 2023 Jeep Wrangler maintained its rugged, no-nonsense design, reminiscent of a brick on wheels. The fourth-generation JL Wrangler featured a boxy aesthetic with wide fenders, Jeep's iconic seven-slot grille, and round headlights. The Wrangler's design allowed for customization, with options to remove doors and fold down the windshield for an open-air experience. The limited-edition "Reign" purple paint added a touch of flair to the otherwise utilitarian design. Inside, the Wrangler prioritized practicality with easy-to-clean materials and straightforward controls, though it lacked some of the luxury touches found in the GLE.

2023 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a range of powertrains to suit various preferences, starting at approximately $82,800. The lineup included the GLE 350 4Matic, GLE 450 4Matic, and AMG GLE 53 4Matic+, with the GLE 450e PHEV joining for 2024. The GLE 450e combined a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, producing 381 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. This setup allowed the GLE 450e to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in about 5.5 seconds. The hybrid mode offered an estimated fuel economy of 4.1 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres, with a range of 77 kilometres on electric power alone. The GLE's transition between gas and electric power was seamless, and its suspension provided a smooth ride even on rough roads.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler excelled in off-road performance, offering a variety of engine options to suit different needs. The standard Pentastar V6 engine delivered 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, while the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder offered 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. For torque enthusiasts, the 3.0-litre Ecodiesel V6 provided 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. The Wrangler Rubicon 392, with its 6.4-litre V8 engine, boasted 470 horsepower and torque, achieving zero to 100 km/h in roughly 4.5 seconds. The Wrangler's off-road capabilities were enhanced by its solid axles, optional differential lockers, and various transfer case options. However, the 392 model's brakes and steering were less refined for on-road driving.

Form and function

2023 Jeep Wrangler

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered ample space for passengers, with comfortable seating for five and generous headroom and legroom. The cabin felt airy, thanks to the light beige upholstery, and provided excellent outward visibility. The GLE 450e featured a 40/20/40 split-folding second row, offering 630 litres of cargo space. While the GLE could technically accommodate a third row, it was only suitable for young children. The GLE 450e came equipped with numerous comfort features, including power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof. Additional features included a Burmester surround-sound audio system, massaging front seats, and a head-up display.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler's front seats were comfortable, though rear seating was tight, especially in the four-door models. Storage for small items was limited, with a flat dash and small glove box and centre console. The Wrangler offered 2,050 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded. The hard top could be removed in one piece, and the soft top was relatively easy to remove, though the plastic rear window could be cumbersome in cold weather. The Sky One-Touch power soft top provided a convenient open-air experience. The Wrangler featured multiple charging points, including USB-A and USB-C ports, 12-volt outlets, and a 115-volt outlet.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE featured the Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system, with dual 12.3-inch screens serving as the digital instrument panel and main touchscreen. The system was user-friendly, though it required some time to master its features. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with Bluetooth and an improved voice command system. The optional head-up display and augmented reality navigation were praised for their clarity and convenience. However, the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel could be inadvertently activated, causing unexpected volume changes.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler came with a standard 7-inch touchscreen running the Uconnect infotainment system, with an optional 8.4-inch touchscreen available. The system initially appeared complex but was intuitive once familiarized. Jeep's off-road pages provided valuable information for off-road enthusiasts. Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto were included and functioned well. The Wrangler offered practical tech features, such as a forward-facing camera and auxiliary switches for aftermarket accessories, but lacked more advanced features like a digital key.

Safety

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

2023 Jeep Wrangler

6/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE boasted a comprehensive suite of active safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and rear cross-traffic alert. Optional features included adaptive cruise control, active lane-keep assist, and evasive steering assist. The GLE's safety systems were unobtrusive and reliable. The 2022 model received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, though the 2024 model had not yet been tested.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler's standard safety features were limited to a rearview camera, electronic roll mitigation, and stability control. Advanced safety features like blind-spot monitoring and forward collision warning were standard only on higher trims or available as options. The Wrangler received mixed safety ratings from the IIHS, with some trims receiving Poor ratings for headlights. The NHTSA awarded the Wrangler four out of five stars for frontal crash tests and three out of five for rollover ratings.
