2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC Reviews Summary

It may be all-new for 2023, but the GLC's redesign is so conservative, it's hard to tell. Bigger changes can be found inside and the overall upgrades keep it at the top of the small luxury SUV class. The previous-generation GLC Coupe returns unchanged but replacements are in the works.

2023 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 is living on borrowed time. The current-generation model has been on sale since 2017, and while it still seems fresh as a daisy, seven years is a long time in the automotive world. In addition, aside from a new Rhodium White premium paint option, Mazda makes no other changes to the 2023 CX-5. Furthermore, the CX-5 now lives side-by-side with the Mazda CX-50, and when you consider the existence of the CX-30, the CX-90, and the upcoming CX-70, well, it certainly doesn’t seem as though the CX-5 will remain in Mazda’s new car lineup for much longer.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

2023 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV presented a blend of new and familiar elements. The GLC 300 was redesigned, sharing its platform with the revamped C-Class sedan, while the GLC Coupe models carried over from the previous year, with new versions expected for the 2024 model year. Despite the GLC 300 being an all-new car, discerning the differences required a keen eye, with the most noticeable change being the narrower taillights. The grille, roofline, and beltline remained similar, making it easy to mistake for the first-generation GLC, which had been in production since 2016. This continuity wasn't necessarily negative, as the GLC had led the small luxury SUV class for much of its production run, offering a classy design that stood the test of time. The interior received a significant makeover, featuring a large vertical infotainment touchscreen and a tablet-like instrument panel, aligning with newer Mercedes models. The GLC's cockpit design was simpler and cleaner compared to rivals like the BMW X3, Audi Q5, and Lexus NX.

The 2023 Mazda CX-5, despite its age, remained a strong contender in the compact crossover SUV segment, provided its small back seat, cramped cargo area, and challenging infotainment system weren't deal-breakers. The CX-5 was stylish and constructed with high-quality materials, resembling a small luxury SUV more than a mass-market vehicle. The available turbocharged engine delivered impressive power, and the CX-5 boasted a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS. Mazda had redesigned and renamed the CX-5 as the CX-50, a strategic move to transition loyal customers to the new model. The CX-5 exuded quality, refinement, and sophistication across all versions, with the 2.5 Turbo Signature model offering premium features like Nappa leather upholstery. The CX-5's turbocharged engine provided a satisfying driving experience, with structural and suspension updates enhancing its performance and comfort.

Performance

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

6/10

2023 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 was powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, producing 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. It featured a 9-speed automatic transmission and standard 4Matic all-wheel-drive in Canada. The GLC 300 accelerated smoothly, reaching 100 km/h in approximately 6.2 seconds, which was average for its class. The brake pedal was slightly soft, but effective, and the suspension prioritized comfort over sporty handling. The GLC 4Matic Coupe retained its older four-cylinder turbo engine, also producing 255 hp, while the AMG GLC 43 Coupe offered a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 with 385 hp, providing a sportier option.

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 offered a standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 187 hp and 186 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and standard AWD. The CX-5 2.5 Turbo featured a turbocharged engine delivering 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel, or 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular fuel. The turbo engine's power increase was complemented by structural and suspension improvements, enhancing the CX-5's driving dynamics. The CX-5 2.5 Turbo provided a quick and enjoyable driving experience, with responsive steering and brakes, making it a delight on various road conditions.

Form and function

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

2023 Mazda CX-5

6/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC offered comfortable front seats with ample adjustment options, featuring synthetic leather upholstery that mimicked genuine hides. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel were standard in Canada, along with a 64-colour ambient lighting system. The GLC provided sufficient storage space, though the piano black lid of the centre console attracted dust and fingerprints. The rear seats accommodated average adults comfortably, with limited headroom for taller passengers. The standard GLC offered 620 litres of cargo space, while the GLC Coupe's sloping roofline reduced cargo capacity to 500 litres.

The 2023 Mazda CX-5's front seats were improved for comfort and support, with height-adjustable options for both front seats in most trims. Higher trims offered power adjustments, heated and ventilated seats, and premium Nappa leather upholstery. However, the CX-5's technology, storage space, and rear-seat room were less impressive. The infotainment system lacked a conversational voice recognition system, and the control knob required attention to operate. The CX-5 provided 871 litres of cargo space behind the rear seat, with a maximum of 1,680 litres with the seats folded, which was less than some rivals.

Technology

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

5/10

2023 Mazda CX-5

3/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC featured an 11.9-inch touchscreen with sharp graphics and immediate responses, though its lower placement on the dash made it more distracting to use. The MBUX infotainment system offered excellent voice recognition, but the lack of physical buttons made adjustments more challenging. Standard connectivity included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with an available Burmester 3D Surround Sound system.

The 2023 Mazda CX-5's Mazda Connect infotainment system had a 10.25-inch display with sophisticated graphics, but its physical controls were awkward to use. The system lacked a helpful voice recognition system, and the control knob required attention to operate. Mazda Connect offered Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with a free three-year trial of Mazda Connected Services. Upper trims included a 10-speaker Bose audio system and a surround-view camera system.

Safety

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

2023 Mazda CX-5

10/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC's crash-test results were not yet available, but it was expected to perform well based on Mercedes' reputation. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and a blind-spot monitor. The optional Intelligent Drive package added adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and other advanced features. The GLC Coupe shared similar safety features.

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 offered comprehensive safety features under the i-Activsense banner, with most technologies standard. The 2.5 Turbo Signature trim included additional features like a surround-view camera system and Traffic Jam Assist. The CX-5 received five-star ratings from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick ranking from IIHS. However, it lacked a warning message for driving without headlights at night, a concern that Mazda needed to address.
