2023 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 is living on borrowed time. The current-generation model has been on sale since 2017, and while it still seems fresh as a daisy, seven years is a long time in the automotive world. In addition, aside from a new Rhodium White premium paint option, Mazda makes no other changes to the 2023 CX-5. Furthermore, the CX-5 now lives side-by-side with the Mazda CX-50, and when you consider the existence of the CX-30, the CX-90, and the upcoming CX-70, well, it certainly doesn’t seem as though the CX-5 will remain in Mazda’s new car lineup for much longer.

2024 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

Though Mazda hasn’t redesigned its popular compact crossover SUV since 2017, a program of continuous refinement makes the 2024 CX-5 better than ever. It might even be too good. It has shared showroom space with the similarly sized Mazda CX-50 model since last year but continues to outsell its newer and slightly more expensive sibling. As it turns out, there are numerous reasons for that.

Verdict: Mazda positions the CX-5 as an SUV for active urbanites, and it serves perfectly in its role. Stylish design, taut dimensions, excellent outward visibility, a comfortable cabin, commendable quality, and impressive safety ratings make it a great choice. Plus, the 2024 Mazda CX-5 is genuinely enjoyable to drive.

Look and feel

2023 Mazda CX-5

8/10

2024 Mazda CX-5

9/10

The 2023 Mazda CX-5, despite its age, was a standout in the compact crossover SUV segment. It exuded a sense of luxury with its stylish design and high-quality materials, making it feel more like a premium vehicle than a mass-market option. The available turbocharged engine provided impressive power, and the model boasted a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS. However, its small back seat, cramped cargo area, and frustrating infotainment system were potential drawbacks. Mazda's decision to eventually phase out the CX-5 in favour of the CX-50 was more about marketing strategy than the model's performance or appeal.

In contrast, the 2024 Mazda CX-5 retained the same design that debuted in 2017, which had aged well and continued to look modern and appealing. The new Suna trim in the U.S. featured exclusive Zircon Sand paint and Terracotta leather seats, adding a touch of exclusivity. Mazda improved the fuel economy for the base engine, added wireless charging, and introduced wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to several trims. The 2024 model maintained its upscale feel with upgraded interior materials and technology, offering a sophisticated crossover SUV experience at a mainstream price.

Performance

2023 Mazda CX-5

8/10

2024 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 offered a choice between a standard 187-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and a more powerful 256-hp turbocharged variant. The turbo engine, especially when run on premium fuel, delivered 320 lb-ft of torque, making it a compelling option for those seeking more power. The CX-5's driving dynamics were enhanced by structural and suspension improvements, providing a firm and connected ride. However, the turbo engine's fuel efficiency was less impressive, with a combined rating of 9.8 L/100 km, and real-world tests showed even higher consumption.

For 2024, the CX-5 Turbo maintained the same power output, with 256 hp on premium gas and 227 hp on regular. The torque delivery was slightly adjusted, arriving at 2,500 rpm with premium fuel. The 2024 model continued to offer a smooth and responsive driving experience, thanks to Mazda's G-Vectoring Control Plus technology and standard all-wheel drive. However, fuel efficiency remained a concern, with observed consumption at 10.3 L/100 km. The CX-5's handling was refined, providing a quiet and stable ride on highways and lively performance on twisty roads.

Form and function

2024 Mazda CX-5

7/10

The 2023 CX-5 featured improved front seats for better comfort and support, with power adjustments available on higher trims. The interior was luxurious, especially in the Signature trim with Nappa leather. However, the CX-5's interior space was limited, with smaller storage areas and a cramped back seat. Cargo capacity was 871 litres behind the rear seat and 1,680 litres with the seats folded, which was less than many competitors.

In 2024, the CX-5 continued to offer comfortable seating with standard heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. The interior was well-designed, with high-quality materials that rivalled luxury brands. While the CX-5 was smaller in its segment, it provided adequate comfort for four adults. The cargo space remained the same, with 871 litres behind the rear seats and 1,680 litres with them folded. The cabin's design and quality elevated the CX-5 above most mass-market rivals.

Technology

2024 Mazda CX-5

7/10

The 2023 Mazda CX-5's infotainment system, Mazda Connect, featured a 10.25-inch display with sophisticated graphics but was frustrating to use due to its lack of a touchscreen and awkward physical controls. The system required memorization and focus, which could be distracting while driving. Despite these issues, it offered features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Bose premium audio system on higher trims.

In 2024, Mazda allowed touchscreen operation for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, addressing some user concerns. The infotainment system still relied on a control knob and buttons, which could be cumbersome compared to touchscreens. Mazda Connected Services offered remote engine starting and other features, while a 10-speaker Bose system provided quality audio. The 2024 model improved connectivity with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on several trims.

Safety

2024 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2023 CX-5 excelled in safety, with standard i-Activsense driver assistance technologies like adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and lane-keeping assist. Higher trims offered additional features like a surround-view camera and Traffic Jam Assist. The CX-5 received top safety ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS, though it lacked a warning for driving without headlights at night.

For 2024, the CX-5 continued to offer comprehensive ADAS, with upgrades available on higher trims. The standard safety features performed well, with adaptive headlights and a traffic sign recognition system enhancing safety. While the 2024 model did not receive a Top Safety Pick designation from the IIHS, it maintained five-star ratings from the NHTSA.
