2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS vs 2023 Kia Telluride

During our time in Texas, we experienced the 2023 Kia Telluride X-Line and X-Pro models, which featured refreshed front and rear styling, updated headlights and taillights, and new wheel designs. The Telluride offered new paint colours like Midnight Lake Blue, Dawning Red, and Jungle Green, while the interior introduced fresh hues such as Terracotta, Navy, and Sage Green. The X-Line model replaced the Nightfall Edition, boasting a raised suspension, unique grille design, and black 20-inch wheels, while the X-Pro model added exclusive 18-inch wheels and all-terrain tires, enhancing its off-road appeal. Inside, the Telluride's updates were subtle, with a digital instrumentation panel and a standard 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system under a curved 24-inch glass piece, pushing the SUV into a more modern era.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS, on the other hand, exuded a soft sensuality in its design, which, while bordering on boring, aged gracefully. Our GLS 450 test vehicle featured stunning 22-inch AMG rims, a new silver four-louver grille design, and polished metal exterior accents. Inside, the GLS 450 showcased a Bahia Brown over Black interior with natural-grain Grey Oak, contrast stitching, and polished aluminum accents, creating a luxurious environment. The GLS 450, the most affordable version, came with a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid technology, while higher trims offered a twin-turbo V8. Our test vehicle included the AMG Line and Exclusive Trim Packages, enhancing its aesthetic appeal and comfort.

The 2023 Kia Telluride retained its 3.8-litre V6 engine, producing 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. It offered various driving modes, including Eco, Comfort, Smart, Sport, and Snow, with an AWD system featuring a low-speed Lock setting for power distribution. The Telluride X-Line averaged 9.8 litres per 100 kilometres, while the X-Pro returned 11.5 L/100 km, including off-roading. The X-Pro model, with its raised suspension and all-terrain tires, excelled off-road, showcasing its capabilities on a Texas ranch. On highways, the Telluride provided a smooth ride, though the off-road tires made it feel slightly squishier in turns.

In contrast, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450, with its 375 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, offered smooth acceleration, reaching 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds. The mild-hybrid system added an instant 148 lb-ft of torque, enhancing its lively feel. A nine-speed automatic transmission and variable 4Matic AWD system provided seamless power delivery. The GLS 450's maximum towing capacity was 3,500 kilograms, with a fuel economy rating of 11.3 L/100 km. The driving experience was sublime, with the adaptive air suspension defying physics on twisty roads, while the massive tires provided excellent grip. The GLS also featured an Off-Road menu within MBUX, aiding in off-road adventures.

The 2023 Kia Telluride accommodated seven or eight passengers, with premium Nappa leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and heated and ventilated front- and second-row captain’s chairs. The interior offered ample space, with comfortable seating and a power lumbar stabilization system for long trips. The second row featured manual sunshades, USB ports, and storage pockets, while the third row provided decent comfort for adults. Cargo space was generous, with 601 litres behind the third row, expanding to 2,455 litres with both rear rows folded.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS, equipped with the AMG Line package, featured sportier styling but posed challenges when entering or exiting. The front seats offered comfort with leather surfaces, heating, ventilation, and massage programs. The GLS provided excellent visibility and a new steering wheel design. The second row offered heated seats, four-zone climate control, and optional captain’s chairs, though accessing the third row was cumbersome. The third-row space was snug for adults, but kids would find it adequate. Cargo space was practical, with 355 litres behind the third row, expanding to 2,400 litres with seats folded.

The 2023 Kia Telluride came standard with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, featuring Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM, and Kia Connect services. The system supported OTA updates and Bluetooth pairing for two devices. It included Driver Talk and Quiet Mode, a wireless phone charger, and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. The digital-key technology and Full Display rear-view mirror added convenience, while the optional HUD provided additional driving information.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS featured the latest MBUX infotainment system, with a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. The system offered improved graphics and themes, though touch-sensitive controls caused occasional frustration. MBUX excelled in intuitive operation, voice recognition, and augmented reality navigation. The Burmester surround-sound system with Dolby Atmos technology enhanced the audio experience.

The 2023 Kia Telluride offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, including forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, and automatic emergency braking. It included blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-keeping assist. The adaptive cruise control system with stop-and-go capability and Highway Drive Assist 1.5 provided semi-autonomous driving assistance. The Telluride earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS came with over 20 significant safety features, adjustable through MBUX. The forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist systems operated smoothly. The adaptive cruise control and lane-centring assist handled various driving conditions with ease, providing a seamless driving experience.
