2022 Volvo XC60 Reviews Summary

The 2022 Volvo XC60 brings the Swedish automaker’s signature style and solid engineering to one of the most popular luxury SUV segments. Slotting between the XC40 and XC90 in size, the XC60 competes against compact SUVs like the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Infiniti QX50, Lexus NX, and Mercedes-Benz GLC. With so many choices, Volvo needed to keep the XC60 fresh. So, the automaker gave it some notable updates for the 2022 model year.

The current version of the XC60, representing the model’s second generation, has been around since the 2018 model year. For 2022, it gets new mild-hybrid powertrains, mildly updated exterior styling, and the Android-based infotainment system previously seen in the electric Volvo XC40 Recharge and Polestar 2.

The reshuffled 2022 XC60 lineup for Canada includes the B5 mild hybrid with the base Momentum, and the B6 mild hybrid in Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription trim levels. The carryover Volvo XC60 T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid is also offered in Inscription, R-Design, and sporty Polestar Engineered guises. We spent a day driving the B6 R-Design model.

2023 Volvo XC60 Reviews Summary

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are smart for certain consumers. They allow people to give electric vehicle ownership a try before diving into the deep end of the pool by acclimating people to nightly plug-ins and the benefits of electric-only driving.

At the same time, they eliminate a phenomenon called “range anxiety,” which is the mild panic EV drivers may feel when their battery gets low. That’s because they also have a gasoline engine, and that means you can take a cross-country trip in one without ever needing to find a charging station.

Talk about a win-win situation. And among luxury PHEVs, the 2023 Volvo XC60 Recharge is an appealing choice. But it certainly does not come cheap.

Look and feel

2022 Volvo XC60

8/10

2023 Volvo XC60

10/10

The 2022 Volvo XC60 featured subtle styling updates that enhanced its sporty appearance. The new front fascia included "air blades" on either side of the grille, while a redesigned rear bumper concealed the tailpipes. New wheel designs were introduced across all models, and the front grille was reworked to house sensors for driver-assist systems behind a heated Volvo logo. The XC60 shared its Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform with other Volvo models, such as the XC90 and S90. Inside, the interior remained largely unchanged, maintaining a clean design with a portrait-oriented touchscreen and minimal clutter. The B6 R-Design model added flair with aluminum mesh speaker grilles and textured seats, though the overall interior felt subdued compared to other Volvo models.

In contrast, the 2023 Volvo XC60 offered a more refined and luxurious experience. The Recharge model, with its Ultimate package and Dark exterior theme, featured a stylish design with 20-inch wheels and Thunder Grey paint. The interior showcased classic Scandinavian minimalism, with black leather seats, wood trim, metal accents, and ambient lighting. The panoramic sunroof and Orrefors crystal gear selector knob added to the opulent feel. While the overall theme was aging gracefully, the XC60 maintained its reputation as a style and design leader.

The B6 powertrain also included an electric supercharger. The B5 delivered 258 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque, while the B6 offered 295 hp and 310 lb-ft. Both used an eight-speed automatic transmission and came with standard all-wheel drive in Canada. The XC60 Recharge plug-in hybrid, with a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-litre engine, produced 400 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque, achieving 0 to 60 mph in 5 seconds.
