2022 Volvo XC40 Reviews Summary

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge AWD is an all-electric version of the XC40 subcompact crossover SUV. The Recharge was launched for the 2021 model year, so it doesn't get any significant changes for 2022. It comes with standard all-wheel drive (AWD; front-wheel drive is not offered in our market), and Natural Resources Canada says this plug-in electric vehicle can go up to 359 kilometres on a single charge. Is this the breakthrough EV we’ve been waiting for?

2022 BMW X3 Reviews Summary

Since its inception in 2003, the BMW X3 has grown to become one of the brand’s top sellers. And starting with its second generation (circa 2010), the luxury compact crossover has been built at BMW Spartanburg—the automaker’s only manufacturing facility north of the Mexican border. Incidentally, because Spartanburg is the global producer of every gas-powered BMW crossover besides the X1 and X2, the plant also boasts the highest production numbers of any BMW plant worldwide. One can speculate that the popular X3 has a lot to do with that.

Last redesigned for 2018, the X3 receives a rather hefty mid-cycle refresh for 2022. Updates include design tweaks, new engines, more technology, and an expanded suite of safety features. (Interestingly, while the BMW X3 xDrive30e plug-in hybrid has been dropped from the lineup in the United States, it continues in 2022 in Canada. This model is not covered in this review.)

2022 Volvo XC40

9/10

2022 BMW X3

7/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge was a testament to Volvo's approach of easing traditional car owners into the electric vehicle (EV) world without drastic changes. From the outside, it closely resembled its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart, maintaining the same basic shape and structure. The most noticeable difference was the solid panel in the grill, replacing the airflow-dependent design of the gas version. Subtle details like the enlarged fuel-filler flap for the charge port, trim-specific alloy wheels, and the absence of tailpipes distinguished it as an EV. The XC40's design was a nod to Volvo's Swedish roots, with features like Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights and a floating roof illusion. Inside, the XC40 boasted a Scandinavian design sensibility, offering an airy and roomy cabin despite its compact SUV classification. The harmonious dash elements and premium finishes underscored its luxury status.

In contrast, the 2022 BMW X3 presented a more aggressive exterior design with a larger kidney grille and adaptive full LED headlights. The rear featured new taillights with a black surround and pincer claw-shaped brake light LEDs, adding a modern touch. The X3 offered a variety of exterior updates, including an M Sport Package for xDrive30i models and new metallic paint options. Inside, the X3's cabin was clean and efficient, with a tailored design. It featured a variety of inserts, including wood trim and synthetic leather upholstery, with options for premium Vernasca leather. The interior was spacious, with adjustable front seats and a panoramic moonroof available. The X3's design was more about practicality and comfort, with a focus on providing a pleasant driving experience.

Performance

2022 Volvo XC40

8/10

2022 BMW X3

7/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge was powered by a 78-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, driving two permanent magnet electric motors for all-wheel drive (AWD). It delivered an impressive 402 horsepower and 486 pound-feet of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. The XC40 Recharge featured regenerative braking, which recaptured energy during deceleration to charge the battery. Drivers could engage one-pedal drive, maximizing regenerative braking and preserving battery charge. The XC40 Recharge's lower centre of gravity, due to the battery placement, contributed to its stable handling. It had a range of 359 kilometres on a full charge, with fast-charging capabilities. The gasoline-powered XC40 models offered different performance levels, with the T4 and T5 models providing 0-100 km/h times of 8.5 and 6.4 seconds, respectively.

The 2022 BMW X3 offered a range of performance options. The base xDrive30i model featured a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, with a 0-100 km/h time of 6.3 seconds. The X3 M40i, on the other hand, boasted a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with a mild-hybrid system, delivering 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. It accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. The M40i's performance was enhanced by a flap-controlled sports exhaust system, sport brakes, and an adaptive suspension. The mild-hybrid system provided additional power during acceleration but did not significantly improve fuel efficiency. The X3's AWD system and performance control added to its dynamic driving experience, making it a capable highway performer.

Form and function

2022 BMW X3

7/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge excelled in form and function, offering clever storage solutions and comfort features. The absence of a gasoline engine allowed for a front trunk, or "frunk," providing extra storage space. Inside, the cabin featured ample cubbies and nooks for modern essentials, with comfortable front seats and suitable rear seats for outboard passengers. The XC40 Recharge offered up to 1,628 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded flat and had a towing capacity of 907 kilograms.

The 2022 BMW X3 provided a spacious and practical interior, accommodating five passengers comfortably. The rear seats featured a 40/20/40-split, offering flexibility for cargo and passenger needs. The X3's cargo area was roomy enough for backpacks and equipment, with a power tailgate for convenience. The SensaTec faux-leather seats were comfortable, with the option to upgrade to Vernasca leather for added softness. The X3's interior featured improved ergonomics, with a redesigned centre console and larger infotainment system. The standard 10.25-inch infotainment screen could be upgraded to a 12.3-inch touchscreen, offering a modern and user-friendly interface.

Technology

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge was equipped with a range of advanced technologies. It featured a 9.3-inch centre-stack touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, running on the Android Automotive operating system. This system included Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play store, with Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth connectivity. The XC40 Recharge supported over-the-air updates for both the infotainment system and vehicle software. However, the range and state of charge were displayed as a percentage, which could cause range anxiety for some drivers.

The 2022 BMW X3 offered BMW Live Cockpit Plus with iDrive 7 telematics as standard, featuring a 5.1-inch colour display instrument panel and a 10.25-inch infotainment screen. The system included navigation, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a range of connected digital features. An optional Live Cockpit Professional upgraded both screens to 12.3 inches, providing a fully digital experience. The X3's infotainment system was customizable, with multiple control options, including steering wheel-mounted controls, voice activation, and the iDrive controller. The X3 also offered a premium Harman Kardon surround sound system and a range of tech options for added convenience.
