2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

The SUV that’s now known as the GLS was launched for the 2007 model year as the GL-Class, when Mercedes decided it needed a bigger, more luxurious SUV to sit above the M-Class in its lineup. The GL-Class and M-Class were rebadged the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class and GLE-Class, respectively, in 2014 when Mercedes introduced a new naming scheme across its lineup.

The current version of the GLS was introduced for the 2020 model year, and represents the model’s third generation. It’s aimed at other full-size luxury SUVs, including the BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, Land Rover Range Rover, Lincoln Navigator, and Lexus LX.

Four models are available in Canada: the base six-cylinder GLS 450 4Matic, the GLS 580 4Matic, the AMG GLS 63 4Matic+, and the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4Matic. Availability is currently limited, and specifications for the 2022 model year are not available. However, they are expected to be very close to those listed for 2021, which were used as reference for the information provided here. We tested a U.S.-specification 2022 GLS 450 for this review.

2022 Lincoln Navigator Reviews Summary

Sometimes, only a full-size SUV will do. Among the handful of large luxury models available, the 2022 Lincoln Navigator stands apart with its classically elegant design, robust towing capacity, and soothing comfort in all three rows of seats.

For the 2022 Navigator, Lincoln makes numerous changes to update the SUV’s styling, comfort, technology, safety, and driving dynamics. In short, the facelift has revived the aging Navigator, keeping it competitive against newer rivals.

Look and feel

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

2022 Lincoln Navigator

8/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS presented a more understated and refined appearance compared to its flashier competitors like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. Mercedes opted for a subtle design, avoiding the ostentatious grilles seen on models like the BMW X7. However, for those seeking a more dramatic look, the AMG GLS 63 and Maybach versions offered enhanced visual elements such as flared wheel arches, chrome detailing, and larger wheels. Inside, the GLS maintained a luxurious feel with features like leather upholstery and ambient lighting, though some might find the interior too subdued. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen were well integrated, providing a high-quality experience without feeling overly delicate.

In contrast, the 2022 Lincoln Navigator underwent subtle styling changes, including new headlights, taillights, and wheel designs. The front end received a restyle, though it was noted to have less elegance than previous models. Inside, the Navigator continued to impress with high-quality materials and a mid-century modern design. The new Constellation instrumentation and infotainment display theme added a unique touch, resembling a starry sky. The Navigator's interior was spacious and comfortable, with features like heated, ventilated, and massaging seats. The new Sync 4 infotainment system with a larger touchscreen improved the overall user experience, making the Navigator a strong contender in the luxury SUV market.

Performance

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

7/10

2022 Lincoln Navigator

8/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 was equipped with a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, producing 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The engine was complemented by the Mercedes EQ Boost mild-hybrid system, which added 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque in short bursts. The GLS 450 featured a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard 4Matic all-wheel drive. While the six-cylinder engine provided ample power, the suspension lacked the refinement expected in a luxury SUV, resulting in excessive body motion over bumps. The GLS 450 had a towing capacity of 3,500 kilograms, which was slightly less than some competitors.

The 2022 Lincoln Navigator, on the other hand, boasted a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 engine, delivering 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive in Canada, the Navigator offered a robust performance. Its towing capacity ranged from 3,674 to 3,765 kilograms, depending on the configuration. The Navigator's adaptive-damping suspension, equipped with Road Preview technology, provided a smooth ride by preparing for road imperfections in advance. The new electronic brake booster improved brake pedal feel and response, enhancing the overall driving experience.

Form and function

2022 Lincoln Navigator

10/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered a seven-seat configuration with a 60/40 split-folding second-row bench seat and two third-row seats. An optional six-seat version replaced the bench with captain’s chairs. The second-row seats could slide forward and fold for third-row access, providing excellent legroom. Cargo space was 355 litres with all seats in place, expanding to 2,400 litres with the second and third rows folded. The GLS featured power-folding seats and a power tailgate, making loading and unloading cargo convenient. However, some ergonomic issues were noted, such as the touchscreen being difficult to reach.

The 2022 Lincoln Navigator excelled in interior comfort, with heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats that were 30-way power-adjustable. The second-row captain’s chairs offered similar comfort, and the third-row seat was spacious and supportive. The Navigator provided generous storage and cargo space, with 546 litres behind the third row and up to 2,925 litres with the second-row seats folded. The long-wheelbase Navigator L offered even more cargo capacity. The Navigator's interior was well-designed, with easy-to-use controls and a focus on passenger comfort.

2022 Lincoln Navigator

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS featured the MBUX infotainment system with a 12.3-inch touchscreen and digital instrument cluster. It included Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, navigation, and voice recognition. The system offered multiple control options, but the voice recognition was the most user-friendly. The GLS also had an augmented-reality navigation feature, though the embedded navigation system occasionally suggested inefficient routes.

The 2022 Lincoln Navigator introduced the Sync 4 infotainment system with a 13.2-inch touchscreen. The system supported Bluetooth, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay, and allowed users to customize settings through user profiles. The voice recognition system was improved but not flawless. The Navigator also featured an upgraded rear-seat entertainment system with Amazon Fire TV, providing access to streaming services. The optional 28-speaker Revel 3D audio system delivered exceptional sound quality.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS came with standard safety features such as forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keep assist. Additional features like adaptive cruise control and a surround-view camera system were optional. Crash-test ratings were not available at the time of publication.

The 2022 Lincoln Navigator introduced new driver assistance systems, including Intersection Assist, Active Park Assist 2.0, and ActiveGlide. The surround-view camera system became standard. ActiveGlide, a semi-autonomous driving technology, allowed for hands-free driving on approved highways. While the system performed well, it required the driver to remain attentive. The Navigator's safety features contributed to a comprehensive safety package.
