2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional SUV platform with body-on-frame construction as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 1,322 litres of cargo behind its second-row seat.

2023 Chevrolet Blazer Reviews Summary

The Chevrolet Blazer is one of the oldest SUV nameplates on the market, and while the current version might disappoint fans of the original, it’s very much on-trend with modern times.

Chevy launched the Blazer as truck-based off-roader, starting with the original K5 Blazer, and following that it up with a smaller S-10 Blazer based on its compact pickup truck. The Blazer was shelved in the early 2000s, then revived for the 2019 model year as a car-based crossover SUV, eschewing ruggedness for greater efficiency and on-road refinement in a shift that reflected the utility-vehicle market as a whole.

The General Motors decision not to go all-in on nostalgia with a new off-road Blazer might seem questionable in the wake of the revived Ford Bronco, but the market for two-row midsize crossovers like the modern Blazer is even stronger, and it's filled with rival offerings like the Ford Edge, Honda Passport, Hyundai Santa Fe, Nissan Murano, Toyota Venza, and Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport.

For 2023, notable changes include a new 10-inch touchscreen display and available wireless charging for all trim levels, some styling changes, and new wheel designs and colour options. In Canada, the lineup consists of LT, True North, Premier, and RS trim levels (we checked out a Blazer RS for this review). A Chevy Blazer EV is also on the way for the 2024 model year, but this will be a completely different vehicle based on GM’s Ultium EV component set.

Look and feel

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Chevrolet Blazer

9/10

The 2022 Lexus GX retained a classic design that harkened back to its first-generation model from 2002, with only subtle updates to its exterior. The signature spindle grille, running lights, and triple-beam LED headlights were the main distinguishing features. Inside, the cabin was crafted with the high-quality materials and refinement that Lexus was known for, providing a quiet and luxurious environment. Despite its dated design, the GX offered a sense of timelessness and reliability, with a focus on comfort and quality.

In contrast, the 2023 Chevrolet Blazer embraced a more modern and sleek design, with styling cues reminiscent of road cars. Its low roofline, leaned-back pillars, and large grille framed by stacked headlights gave it a striking appearance. The Blazer RS model, with its blackout trim, Red Hot paint, and 21-inch wheels, stood out as a bold choice in the crossover segment. Inside, the Blazer offered a sportier aesthetic with a Camaro-inspired dashboard, large round air vents, and a two-tone upholstery scheme. The interior was both functional and stylish, with thoughtful details like the placement of USB ports and temperature controls integrated into the air vents.

Performance

2022 Lexus GX

6/10

2023 Chevrolet Blazer

6/10

The 2022 Lexus GX was powered by a 4.6-litre V8 engine, producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. Despite its hefty curb weight of 2,325 kilograms, the GX managed a 0-60 mph time of 7.8 seconds, aided by its torque delivery at 3,500 rpm. The GX's full-time 4WD system, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, provided stability and off-road capability, though its high drag coefficient and fuel consumption of 14.5 litres per 100 kilometres were less impressive. The Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) enhanced the GX's ride quality, making it more stable and secure, though the steering and brake pedal required some adjustment.

The 2023 Chevrolet Blazer offered two engine options: a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 228 horsepower and a 3.6-litre V6 with 308 horsepower. The V6 engine, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, delivered impressive acceleration and a sporty exhaust note. The Blazer's AWD system required manual engagement, which was less convenient than some competitors' automatic systems. While the Blazer's handling was affected by its weight and design, it provided a comfortable highway ride with Active Noise Cancellation and a well-tuned suspension. The Blazer's towing capacity of 2,041 kilograms was competitive for its class, though it lacked off-road capabilities.

Form and function

2022 Lexus GX

2/10

2023 Chevrolet Blazer

7/10

The 2022 Lexus GX offered an elevated driving position and clear visibility, with comfortable seats and well-padded interiors. However, the interior design was somewhat dated, with physical controls that were sometimes confusing to use. The GX's third-row seat was cramped and difficult to access, reducing cargo space when in use. The side-swinging tailgate added to the inconvenience, especially in tight parking spaces. Cargo capacity was limited, with 328 litres behind the third row and 1,833 litres with all seats folded.

The 2023 Chevrolet Blazer, a two-row, five-seat vehicle, provided ample space for passengers and cargo. While rear-seat headroom was slightly below average, the Blazer offered decent legroom and a spacious feel from the driver's seat. Cargo capacity was 864 litres with the rear seats up and 1,818 litres with them folded, slightly less than some competitors. The Blazer's design made it easy to maneuver, with short overhangs and a clear view from the windshield. Functional details like USB port placement and temperature controls added to the interior's appeal.

Technology

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Chevrolet Blazer

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX featured a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a significant upgrade from previous models. It included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and navigation, along with a CD player and Lexus Enform connected services. The system's dual-screen view and voice recognition technology were highlights, though the placement of stereo controls was less intuitive. Standard Intuitive Parking Assist and optional surround-view cameras added to the GX's tech offerings.

The 2023 Chevrolet Blazer came with a 10.2-inch touchscreen as standard, along with wireless device charging and a 4.2-inch digital instrument cluster. Higher trims offered an 8-inch display, built-in navigation, and an eight-speaker Bose audio system. The infotainment system was user-friendly, with intuitive menus and wireless connectivity options. While the Blazer lacked a dedicated button for the 360-degree camera system, its tech presentation was modern and competitive within its segment.

Safety

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Chevrolet Blazer

7/10

The 2022 Lexus GX, despite its age, included the Lexus Safety System+ with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and more. However, it lacked some advanced safety technologies found in competitors. The absence of features like lane-keeping assist and semi-autonomous driving systems might appeal to those who prefer a less intrusive driving experience.

The 2023 Chevrolet Blazer offered the Chevy Safety Assist Package as standard, with features like automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and GM's Teen Driver monitoring system. Adaptive cruise control was newly available across all trims, and additional options included blind spot monitoring and a 360-degree camera system. The Blazer received high safety ratings from both the IIHS and NHTSA, though it lacked GM's Super Cruise system.
