2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional SUV platform with body-on-frame construction as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 1,322 litres of cargo behind its second-row seat.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

It’s easy for a luxury brand to lose stature and cachet, but it’s hard for a mainstream brand to gain it. Nevertheless, Mazda is giving it the good old college try, having discussed its plan to become a premium brand for more than half a decade.

Unlike some automakers that rely solely on marketing to support their premium brand positioning, Mazda heavily invests in everything from design and engineering to dealership facilities, all to ensure there is substance behind its claim. Now, numerous updates to its most popular model elevate the 2022 Mazda CX-5 solidly into premium territory.

Don’t believe us? Drive one of the turbocharged versions of the 2022 CX-5 back to back with a similarly priced Audi Q3, Buick Envision, BMW X1, GMC Terrain, or Mercedes-Benz GLA, and you’ll see what we mean.

Look and feel

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2022 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX maintained a design that was reminiscent of its predecessors, with the signature spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlights being the most distinguishing features. Despite its dated exterior, the interior offered a sense of luxury and refinement typical of Lexus, with high-quality materials and a quiet cabin. The GX was available in Standard, Premium, and Executive trims, with prices ranging from $72,100 to $83,750, excluding destination charges. The Black Line Special Edition, based on the Premium trim, started at $80,550.

In contrast, the 2022 Mazda CX-5 featured subtle exterior updates, including new LED headlights and taillights, revised bumpers, and a redesigned grille. The top-of-the-line Signature trim received body-colour lower exterior trim, enhancing Mazda's premium brand aspirations. Inside, the CX-5 retained its luxurious feel with Nappa leather upholstery and real wood trim. The seats were redesigned for improved comfort, and the model offered a range of trims with prices from $30,500 to $43,650, excluding destination charges. The Sport Design grade, with a turbocharged engine, was priced at $40,450, with additional options available.

Performance

2022 Lexus GX

6/10

2022 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX was powered by a 4.6-litre V8 engine, producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. Despite its power, the GX's performance was hindered by its 2,325-kilogram curb weight, resulting in a 7.8-second sprint to 60 mph. The SUV's full-time 4WD system and six-speed automatic transmission contributed to its off-road capabilities, while the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System improved on-road stability. However, its fuel consumption was high, with an estimated 14.5 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 offered a base 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. For those seeking more power, a turbocharged version delivered up to 256 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque on premium gas. The CX-5 featured a revised six-speed automatic transmission and standard AWD, with fuel consumption estimates of 9.3 litres per 100 kilometres for the base engine and 9.8 litres for the turbo. The Mazda Intelligent Drive Select system and improved suspension tuning enhanced the driving experience, providing a sporty yet comfortable ride.

Form and function

2022 Lexus GX

2022 Mazda CX-5

7/10

The Lexus GX offered an elevated driving position with a 10-way power-adjustable seat, providing excellent visibility. Its tall, narrow design made it maneuverable, but the steering was slow and heavy. The interior featured comfortable seating and physical controls, though some switchgear was outdated. The third-row seat was cramped and reduced cargo space, with a maximum capacity of 1,833 litres. The side-swinging tailgate further complicated loading.

The Mazda CX-5 addressed previous complaints with new, supportive seats and a sportier driving position. The interior included leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, and heated and ventilated seats. The back seat remained snug, but heated cushions and air vents improved comfort. The control layout was challenging, with a non-touchscreen infotainment system. Cargo space was adequate, with 871 litres behind the rear seats and 1,680 litres with them folded.

Technology

2022 Lexus GX

2022 Mazda CX-5

5/10

The 2022 Lexus GX featured a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, eliminating the need for the outdated Remote Touch Interface. The system included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and navigation, along with a CD player and Lexus Enform connected services. The stereo controls were awkwardly placed, but the dual-screen view and voice recognition were highlights. Intuitive Parking Assist and optional surround-view cameras enhanced safety.

The Mazda CX-5 retained its Mazda Connect infotainment system with a 10.25-inch display, operated via centre console controls. While lacking a touchscreen and natural voice recognition, the system included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mazda Connected Services. A 10-speaker Bose sound system was available on higher trims. The system required acclimation, but once familiar, it was functional.

Safety

2022 Mazda CX-5

10/10

The Lexus GX lacked crash-test ratings but included the Lexus Safety System+ with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and more. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were standard, but advanced driving aids were absent. Safety Connect services were complimentary for three years.

The Mazda CX-5 boasted a comprehensive i-Activsense package with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and more. Higher trims added adaptive headlights, a surround-view camera, and Traffic Jam Assist. The CX-5 received a "Top Safety Pick+" rating from the IIHS, highlighting its safety credentials.
