2022 Jeep Compass Reviews SummaryJeep now considers itself a premium brand. That means it prices its vehicles a little higher than the equivalents offered by mainstream nameplates but still below the traditional luxury marques. In exchange for this price premium, Jeep offers class-leading off-road capabilities, admission into “the club” of Jeep owners, and, with some of its models, high-end trim levels loaded with upscale materials, finishes, and features. This year, Jeep improves the 2022 Compass in an effort to better qualify it as a premium entry. Based on a week spent in the ritzy Compass Trailhawk Elite, we think the SUV is better it was than before. But does it meet the expected standard? Not quite.
2022 Toyota Sienna Reviews SummaryThe 2022 Toyota Sienna hybrid minivan rolls into the second model year following a redesign that made it all-new for 2021. Last year’s successful makeover with a standard hybrid powertrain returns unchanged.

The 2022 Jeep Compass, despite receiving exterior styling updates and new wheel designs, retained much of its appearance from its 2017 redesign. It resembled a smaller version of the Grand Cherokee, with our test vehicle featuring attractive 19-inch multi-spoke wheels in a dark sparkly finish that matched the paint, giving it an upscale look. Inside, the Compass Trailhawk Elite impressed with a new dashboard design, updated digital instrumentation, and infotainment systems. The cabin boasted soft-touch surfaces, luxury-grade leather seats, and enhanced sound deadening, elevating its sophistication. The Trailhawk Elite was the most expensive version, with prices ranging from $29,495 to $42,795, excluding destination charges.
Toyota's Sienna, a stalwart in the minivan segment, embraced its identity with a design that leaned towards SUV styling. The fourth-generation Sienna, launched in 2021, featured a macho front end and cleverly re-engineered door hinges to conceal the slider channel. The rear doors had integrated styling details, and the overall profile was assertive. Inside, the Sienna avoided the typical minivan feel with an uncluttered design and abundant storage options. The second and third rows offered comfortable seating, with available captain’s chairs and a spacious third-row bench. The third row could be easily stored into the floor, and the second-row seats slid significantly to facilitate access.

The 2022 Jeep Compass was equipped with a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 177 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 172 pound-feet of torque at 3,900 rpm. Despite its "Tigershark" moniker, the engine lacked the power to compete with other SUVs. A turbocharger would have improved performance, especially at higher altitudes. The nine-speed automatic transmission, paired with the 4WD system, aimed to maximize fuel efficiency but resulted in a busy and unrewarding powertrain character. The Compass Trailhawk Elite, with its 20.6 cm ground clearance, was capable of light off-roading, while the Trailhawk trim offered enhanced off-road capabilities. However, the driving dynamics needed improvement, with a bouncy ride and excessive lateral motion on uneven surfaces.
The 2022 Toyota Sienna continued with its hybrid powertrain, combining a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with two electric motors to produce 243 horsepower. FWD was standard, with AWD available on most trims. The AWD system added a separate electric motor for the rear wheels, enhancing traction without mechanical complexity. The Sienna's CVT provided smooth power delivery and helped achieve impressive fuel efficiency, with FWD models rated at 6.6 L/100 km combined. The TNGA platform contributed to better-than-expected handling for a minivan, with minimal body roll and a comfortable highway ride. The Sienna's hybrid system, with its 288-volt battery pack, came with a 10-year/240,000-kilometre warranty.
The 2022 Jeep Compass, positioned among compact SUVs, offered enough space for four adults and their luggage. The Trailhawk Elite trim enhanced its premium feel with 12-way power-adjustable front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a redesigned dashboard with a new Uconnect 5 infotainment system. The Compass provided 770 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, expanding to 1,693 litres with the seats folded down. The available hands-free power liftgate added convenience.
The 2022 Toyota Sienna excelled as a family workhorse, capable of accommodating a full 4x8 sheet of plywood with the tailgate closed. The sliding second row added flexibility for loading cargo, with measurements of 949 litres behind the third row, 2,129 litres behind the second row, and 2,860 litres behind the first row. The Sienna also boasted a 1,585-kilogram towing capacity. The power-operated sliding doors and rear liftgate, with available foot-motion triggers, provided added convenience for busy families.
The 2022 Jeep Compass featured the new Uconnect 5 infotainment system, which was five times faster than its predecessor. An 8.4-inch touchscreen was standard, with a 10.1-inch option available. The system supported wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and over-the-air updates. Additional features included a navigation system, WiFi hotspot, and a nine-speaker Alpine premium sound system. The voice recognition system was fast and accurate, though it had some limitations in filtering search results.
The 2022 Toyota Sienna came with a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, standard across all trims, featuring Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM. However, it lacked wireless connectivity for these features. The Sienna offered a range of telematics services, Bluetooth streaming, and optional Qi wireless charging. Higher trims featured a 12-speaker JBL audio system and an available rear-seat entertainment system with an 11.6-inch display. The digital rearview mirror, available on select trims, provided a clear view of the road behind.
The 2022 Jeep Compass improved its safety features, with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assistance available from the Trailhawk grade. Highway Assist was expected later in the model year, pairing adaptive cruise control with lane-centring assistance. However, the Compass had some issues with false positives from the forward-collision warning system. As of the review, crash test results from IIHS and NHTSA were not available, but the previous rollover resistance rating was three stars.
The 2022 Toyota Sienna received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and a five-star rating from NHTSA. The standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 suite included adaptive cruise control, lane-centring, and automatic emergency braking. The Sienna also featured 10 airbags, multiple LATCH connectors, and a rear-seat reminder system. The spare tire location was changed for safety and convenience.
