The 2022 Jeep Compass, despite receiving exterior styling updates and new wheel designs, retained much of its appearance from its 2017 redesign. It resembled a smaller version of the Grand Cherokee, with our test vehicle featuring attractive 19-inch multi-spoke wheels in a dark sparkly finish that matched the paint, giving it an upscale look. Inside, the Compass Trailhawk Elite impressed with a new dashboard design, updated digital instrumentation, and infotainment systems. The cabin boasted soft-touch surfaces, luxury-grade leather seats, and enhanced sound deadening, elevating its sophistication. The Trailhawk Elite was the most expensive version, with prices ranging from $29,495 to $42,795, excluding destination charges.

Toyota's Sienna, a stalwart in the minivan segment, embraced its identity with a design that leaned towards SUV styling. The fourth-generation Sienna, launched in 2021, featured a macho front end and cleverly re-engineered door hinges to conceal the slider channel. The rear doors had integrated styling details, and the overall profile was assertive. Inside, the Sienna avoided the typical minivan feel with an uncluttered design and abundant storage options. The second and third rows offered comfortable seating, with available captain’s chairs and a spacious third-row bench. The third row could be easily stored into the floor, and the second-row seats slid significantly to facilitate access.

The 2022 Jeep Compass was equipped with a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 177 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 172 pound-feet of torque at 3,900 rpm. Despite its "Tigershark" moniker, the engine lacked the power to compete with other SUVs. A turbocharger would have improved performance, especially at higher altitudes. The nine-speed automatic transmission, paired with the 4WD system, aimed to maximize fuel efficiency but resulted in a busy and unrewarding powertrain character. The Compass Trailhawk Elite, with its 20.6 cm ground clearance, was capable of light off-roading, while the Trailhawk trim offered enhanced off-road capabilities. However, the driving dynamics needed improvement, with a bouncy ride and excessive lateral motion on uneven surfaces.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna continued with its hybrid powertrain, combining a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with two electric motors to produce 243 horsepower. FWD was standard, with AWD available on most trims. The AWD system added a separate electric motor for the rear wheels, enhancing traction without mechanical complexity. The Sienna's CVT provided smooth power delivery and helped achieve impressive fuel efficiency, with FWD models rated at 6.6 L/100 km combined. The TNGA platform contributed to better-than-expected handling for a minivan, with minimal body roll and a comfortable highway ride. The Trailhawk Elite trim enhanced its premium feel with 12-way power-adjustable front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a redesigned dashboard with a new Uconnect 5 infotainment system. The Compass provided 770 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, expanding to 1,693 litres with the seats folded down. The available hands-free power liftgate added convenience.
