2022 GMC Yukon Reviews Summary

No longer the exclusive truck-only brand for General Motors now that Buick has gone all-in on SUVs, GMC nevertheless holds a unique position in the automaker's product portfolio. Offering a lineup of "Professional Grade" trucks and SUVs with premium features, enhanced capabilities, and unique exterior and interior designs, GMC toes the line between Chevrolet and Cadillac.

All-new for the 2021 model year, the Yukon full-size SUV gets a standard 12-inch driver information centre and enhanced connectivity for 2022, among other changes. The 2022 GMC Yukon is available in four trim levels: SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year (launched in 2023) keeps the popular Mercedes sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals, which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 3 centimetres to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive (AWD) is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent on a test drive of the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

Look and feel

2022 GMC Yukon

8/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

The 2022 GMC Yukon was a vehicle that embraced chrome with gusto, giving it a premium appearance even at the base SLE level. As one ascended the trim levels to the Denali, the chrome elements became even more pronounced, with the front of the Denali almost entirely constructed of chrome. This included a vast, multi-dimensional grille that resembled an industrial-sized cheese grater, flanked by GMC's signature C-shaped headlights. The Denali's 22-inch bright machined aluminum wheels, part of the optional Ultimate package, stood out against the dark Redwood Metallic paint, adding to its commanding presence. Inside, the Yukon offered a spacious cabin with standard seating for eight, or seven with the optional second-row captain's chairs. The Denali trim featured four exclusive interior designs, with the Teak/Light Shale colour combo providing a premium look through contrasting colours, unique stitching, and natural wood details.

In contrast, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE underwent a subtle exterior makeover that might have gone unnoticed by many. The Mercedes star logos on the front grille were a clever new detail, and changes to the headlights and taillights were subtle. The GLE 450e test vehicle, finished in Twilight Blue metallic and equipped with 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels, presented a handsome appearance. Inside, the GLE 450e exuded class and luxury with Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, complemented by natural grain brown walnut trim. Mercedes offered a wide range of interior colour choices and trims, ensuring a high-quality and robust-looking cabin. The GLE's interior was spacious and comfortable, with plenty of headroom and legroom, and the light beige upholstery contributed to an airy feel. The vehicle's outward visibility was excellent, enhancing the overall driving experience.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 GMC Yukon offered a choice of three engines, including a 5.3-litre V8 engine with 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, standard on all trims except the Denali. The Denali and AT4 trims featured a 6.2-litre V8 producing 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. A 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine, known as the "Baby Duramax," was also available, delivering 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. All engines were paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Yukon had a maximum towing capacity of 3,810 kilograms with the 5.3-litre engine and the Max Trailering Package. The vehicle's independent rear suspension improved handling and ride quality, although some bouncing was noted over rough surfaces. The optional air ride adaptive suspension provided a smoother ride and improved ground clearance for off-roading.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a range of powertrains, including turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines. The GLE 450e featured a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor, producing 381 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. The vehicle's nine-speed automatic transmission sent power to all four wheels, allowing it to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in approximately 5.5 seconds. The GLE 450e's fuel economy was estimated at 4.1 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres, with a range of 77 kilometres on electric power alone. The transition between gas and electric power was seamless, and the suspension provided a smooth and composed ride. The GLE's steering was sophisticated, making it easy to maneuver despite its size.

The 2022 GMC Yukon provided ample space for passengers and cargo, with a redesigned third row offering 886 mm of legroom. The vehicle's wheelbase and length were extended, resulting in increased cargo capacity of 722 litres behind the third row. The second-row seats folded flat, and power-folding options were available for both the second and third rows. The Denali trim featured a power-sliding centre console with additional storage space. Power-retractable assist steps made entry and exit easier, although they could be challenging to keep clean in wet conditions. The pushbutton transmission controls were a modern touch, located to the left of the infotainment touchscreen.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered generous headroom and legroom in both the first and second rows, with a light and airy cabin feel. The vehicle provided 630 litres of cargo space behind the second row, comparing favourably with some competitors. The GLE's optional third-row seat was limited to certain trims and was best suited for young children. Comfort features included power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, and a power liftgate. The GLE 450e test vehicle was equipped with a range of luxury features, including a Burmester surround-sound audio system, ventilated front seats, and a head-up display.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE featured the Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system, with two 12.3-inch screens serving as the digital instrument panel and main touchscreen. The system offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and an improved voice command system. The optional head-up display and augmented reality navigation provided clear and convenient information. The GLE's technology was user-friendly, although the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel could be inadvertently activated.
