2022 GMC Terrain Reviews Summary

“Terrain” is a misnomer as applied to this compact crossover SUV from GMC. The name suggests far more off-roading capability than is available from this restyled Chevy Equinox, and the new AT4 trim level, which equips the 2022 GMC Terrain with standard all-wheel drive (AWD), “sport-terrain” tires, and a steel front skid plate, ought to come with a disclaimer. Based on our testing, the new 2022 Terrain AT4 is all show and no go, as in: “No, you can’t go there in this small SUV.” Not without damaging it, anyway.

2023 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Thanks to the rise of car-based crossovers, today’s SUVs with body-on-frame construction appeal to buyers with specific use-cases in mind: towing and driving off-road. Luxury SUVs like the 2023 Lexus GX appeal to an even narrower cross-section of buyers: those who want to tow or drive off-road and do in style and comfort. With a V8 engine as its trump card, the GX remains compelling amid its small pool of competition, but due to a combination of age and a lack of innovation, Lexus’s only real off-road SUV has fallen out of favour for anyone not enamoured by a V8 growl.

2022 GMC Terrain

6/10

2023 Lexus GX

7/10

The 2022 GMC Terrain underwent a series of updates, including refreshed front styling, new wheel designs, and updated taillights and interior trim. The introduction of the AT4 trim level added a bolder grille design, black 17-inch alloy wheels with sport-terrain tires, and AT4 badges, enhancing its off-road appeal. The test vehicle featured Ebony Twilight metallic paint and a black leather interior, complemented by a suite of packages such as the Tech Package, Infotainment Package II, and GMC Pro Safety Plus Package. Despite these enhancements, the Terrain's interior materials and execution did not fully meet expectations for a vehicle priced over $40,000, with certain design choices like the pushbutton transmission controls and narrow storage tray falling short.

In contrast, the 2023 Lexus GX boasted a commanding presence with its large spindle grille and significant ground clearance. The Black Line Special Edition returned with limited availability and exclusive paint options. Despite its imposing front end, the GX's dimensions appeared more compact from the side, emphasizing its off-road engineering. The interior, however, was marred by an abundance of plastic materials, which detracted from its luxury badge. While the GX offered luxury touches like heated and cooled front seats and impressive leather upholstery, its overall design and materials felt outdated, reflecting its status as a low-selling model with limited updates over the years.

Performance

2022 GMC Terrain

6/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 GMC Terrain was powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine, delivering 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. While the engine's power was modest, the torque was accessible between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm, providing a satisfactory driving experience once the vehicle was in motion. The nine-speed automatic transmission helped maintain the Terrain within its torque band, although the absence of the previously available 2.0-litre engine was felt. The Terrain AT4 offered FWD and AWD modes, with an Off-Road mode and Hill Descent Control system for varied driving conditions. Despite its off-road aspirations, the AT4's ground clearance and suspension tuning limited its capabilities, and the sport-terrain tires offered minimal grip on curves.

The 2023 Lexus GX featured a naturally aspirated 4.6-litre V8 engine, producing 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque. While not the most powerful on paper, the V8 provided a satisfying linear power delivery and a distinctive sound. The GX's towing capacity of 2,948 kilograms was notable, though its fuel economy was less impressive, with estimates of 16.2 litres per 100 kilometres in the city. The GX's weight contributed to its predictable yet manageable handling, with strong brakes and a Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip differential enhancing its 4WD capabilities. Despite its age, the GX's driving dynamics remained competent, aided by features like the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System and multi-terrain select system.

Form and function

2022 GMC Terrain

9/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 GMC Terrain offered a spacious interior for a compact crossover, with power-adjustable front seats, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The AT4 trim featured perforated leather upholstery with caramel-colour contrast stitching, adding an upscale touch. The rear seat provided ample legroom and support, with a rear USB charging port for convenience. Cargo space was generous, with 838 litres behind the second row and 1,792 litres with the rear seat folded. The Terrain also allowed for long items to be loaded by folding the front passenger seat.

The 2023 Lexus GX provided ample cubby space, with a deep centre console bin and convenient cupholder placement. The decision to retain hard buttons for controls was appreciated, though the abundance of buttons required familiarization. The second row offered comfort with captain's chairs and fold-out cupholders, while the third row was cramped and best suited for occasional use. The GX's cargo space was limited, with 328 litres behind the rear seats and 1,322 litres with the third row folded. The side-hinged trunk door posed challenges, requiring effort and space to open.

Technology

2022 GMC Terrain

8/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 GMC Terrain featured two infotainment systems, with the SLT, AT4, and Denali trims offering an 8-inch touchscreen. The system included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM, and GMC Connected Services. The Infotainment Package II added connected navigation and a Bose audio system, though the latter's performance was underwhelming. The voice recognition system was a standout, accurately responding to various prompts. The Tech Package introduced a head-up display, park assist sensors, and a surround-view camera system, enhancing convenience and safety.

The 2023 Lexus GX's infotainment system, updated in 2022, already felt dated. The 10.3-inch touchscreen offered standard features like SiriusXM and smartphone compatibility, but the graphics and responsiveness lagged behind newer Lexus models. The inclusion of a CD player highlighted the system's outdated nature. The GX excelled in off-road technology, with a real 4WD system, downhill assist, and the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System. The multi-terrain monitor and select system further enhanced its off-road prowess.

Safety

2022 GMC Terrain

7/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 GMC Terrain came standard with the GMC Pro Safety Package, including forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, and lane-keeping assist. The Pro Safety Plus Package added adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Terrain received mostly "Good" crash-test scores from the IIHS, though it earned a "Marginal" rating in a new side-impact test. The NHTSA had not evaluated the 2022 Terrain at the time of review.

The 2023 Lexus GX had not been crash-tested by the NHTSA or IIHS, but it featured the Lexus Safety System+ with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, and adaptive cruise control. Despite its older design, the GX incorporated modern safety features, enhancing its overall safety profile.
