My first car and reliable. Handles all conditions well. Love the room and power. Has good towing capability, and yes, it puts you in the cool crowd. The fuel economy sucks, but otherwise loved this rig. East to maintain and runs great int he winter.Apr 22, 2015

Beats you up on long hauls. Reliable as a lead pencil. Parts universally available. The old ones are worth more than bluebook.
Mine will be a project car next year when i can afford.
If you are interested in buying Land Bruiser, give a shout.Aug 09, 2014

This car has been in the family about 30 years, requires virtually no upkeep and still looks great. Dad had it rust treated when he got it and it remains almost rust free today. Wish it had an overdrive, though. At the time the national speed limit was 55 mph and Toyota saw no reason to burden Americans with an extra gear to shift.Jul 16, 2014

This vehicle we have had for some 20+ years. It has been through mud, forest roads, snow, river fording and off road blazing. These conditions as well as highway running. It 'sucks' on gas mileage and the maintenance costs for any 'major' events are high.
BUT, it will carry a ton of stuff and sleep two people side-by-side in the back, fully laid out, between the wheel wells. Can't do that with any of the 'new' ones.Oct 03, 2013

That's right!
. I realize the 2F engine leaves a lot to be desired, but it goes. It goes without oil. It goes without water. It goes without a thermostat, or without a fan. Unfortunately, like a MiG fighter jet, it doesnt go without petrol. Lots and lots of petrol!Jun 21, 2012

Great vehicle.. Being a Toyota maintenance was very easy.. Good low end power for towing .. but max speed is about 120 kmph you cant expect more from a 1984 Landcrusier.. Bit on the high side on fuel ( 4000 cc with 5 speed )
Lovely truck. Took my family into the Wilderness & bought them back safe & in comfort.. Superb off the road.. Excellent 4wd it will go into mud , water, sand but you will be sure you can tread out of it..!!
Cost was a bit high being 1984 YOM, maintenance was nothing it was not a regular runner, on weekends you get in & start it was good to go..!! No major creature comforts it was all add on things.. Its a lot more fun in the Land rover.. but this carries the family camping gear & the bikes.!! to where ever we want to go... Fun for the whole family...!!! Dec 01, 2011

There are only two types of people: Those who love Toyota Land Cruisers, and those who have never owned one! Hands down this 4x4 is in a class of it's own: a real utility vehicle! Not a fast truck, but off road it's a monster. Other than tires and a new after-market radiator, my truck is 100% stock. You just go..... slowly, but surely. Incredible vehicle, kinda like driving a 6X6 Army cargo truck in low.Jul 17, 2011

Has a 3b/h55f swap that runs great. The truck is a bit of a dog on the highway, but plenty torque around town. A re-gear would be a great upgrade, and is about the only thing left I would do. Always starts even in cold weather. I seem to average around 21 mpg in mixed driving.
The interior is hercu-lined, and has Saab leather seats in the front, they are fit the truck perfect and are very comfortable. Rear seat is torn, but salvageable.Mar 16, 2011

great 4bie, handles ok on road and 5 star performance off road
the fuel consumption is reasonable for a straight six 4.0 litre diesel
if you want a car to go anywhere and do anything then id definitely reccomend this model.Jan 03, 2011

I've had a few trucks (all of them cool) but tthis is the one I want back ! Last of the carburated 2f motors, this FJ60 had a 4 speed ... as super slow ... had a nice Old Man Emu Lift ... nice Wilderness Roof Rack ... nice ARB bumpers F&R ... friend (John S) welded a "one-off" perimiter that wrapped up the sides to the steps to the ARB bumper ... rolling on tall'n'skinny BFG 33's with black rock crawler wheels ... who knew a shoebox looking vehicle would be soo sexy ? This thing was SLOW ... talk about 0 to 60 in 90 seconds ! But in low range, it was unstoppable - it would climb a tree if you let it .. did I say it was HUGE ? This thing carried my full size mattress in it's rear with the hatch CLOSED !@#$%^& Dec 12, 2009

perfomance: slow
acceleration: very slow
Braking:good
handling: good for a cruiser
built quality: simple and solid (great)
yes its needed a few repairs due to age and maintenance.
appearance is good for an old car.
cost to run is not the best about 13 ltrs/100km.
fun to drive offroad but on road very boring slow and very bumpy/stiff suspensionOct 22, 2009

87 HJ61 Sahara, 12HT best engine Toyota ever made. Not the fastest 4x4, but very good economy, great torque and fantastic reliability. Dual airconditioning, 5 speed, with personal modifications: rear disc brakes, front axle widening kit, upgraded front brakes, 80 series 16x8 rims with 285x75x15 BFG AT's. RS 9000X adjustable shocks all round, airbags on the rear springs.Nov 24, 2008

The thing has done 400k kilometers, and still starts first time every friggin time, the thing is awesome, the only thing I guess is the fuel comsumption, but shes on LPG so its just as cheap to run as mums 2007 focus. Buy yourself an awesome four wheel drive today. Aug 16, 2008

I bought this car from my autoshop late 2007. it was non-running. i rebuilt the carb, got it running. $2100 later it passed smog. Since then ive put in 3 different transmissions, an aussie locker in the rear end, and a 15" mtx sub that deafens me. overall, i love this truck. its big, loud, and not normal. Its not often you see these around, especially since gas is so much and 13mpg is a dream i wish could come true. But in reality, it gets 11 city, 12 highway. 0-60 in 28-32 seconds. does the quarter mile in 23.77 seconds at 53 mph. but it makes up for it off the road. great axle articulation for stock suspension. only has been stuck due to carelessness on my part, and its never let me down. if your lookin for a big, beefy truck that you can hang truck nuts from, this truck is for you. If your an environmentalist, you might want to turn away.Jul 06, 2008

its great when you go driving off-road, but on-road handling is crap, the steering goes all over the place, its extremely slow and it's extremely heavy. but the manual 4WD is nice as are the manual wheel locksJun 19, 2008
