I own the 2002 Ford Explorer . The lift gate panel should have been a recall. Also the tailgate itself does not have the proper hinge mechanism. It collapses as soon as you lift it up. It does not stay open at all. The whole tailgate area needs to be re-designed. Should be multiple recalls.Sep 16, 2021

Its a very comfortable ride, And was very practical for what i needed. I had just purchased a home and did some small remodels here and there. Having a spacious suv made transporting materials and tools easy as could be! Ive had 0 mechanical issues with it. Unfortunately, Last years winter brought on some rust. So ideally its the first thing that should be fixed with this vehicle. If you knock that out, I believe this car will run and look great for many years to come!Sep 08, 2014

I like the room and the ride. I could easily load my kids and grandchildren with the third row seating and the heat and ac in the rear make it comfortable for everyone. The sound system is excellent and only 6 months old, I have always been a stickler for quality sound playing my music, make the ride much better.Aug 08, 2014

Ford has the ultimate SUV in the Ford Explorer. That is why year in and year out... It is one of the best selling cars in the world. I highly recommend it to everyone I know. Hoping Ford keeps up the good work.Jul 12, 2014

This vehicle is extremely dependable in all types of weather. A foot of snow is not a match for this vehicle. Over the years, maintenance has been a snap. It's been 12 years and it still cleans up so well. It has served us extremely well over the years whether it's going to work or moving furniture.May 10, 2014

Excellent utility vehicle for the money invested, with plenty of interior room, nicely equipped, good looking and comfortable, One of the best SUV's in the market for sure, especially considering the return of investment. I would recommend it and buy another one, without a doubt.Apr 23, 2014

I like the power and leather seating. as well as the 3rd row seating which can be turned into extra cargo room. sunroof is great automatic lights and security system with security light on the side view mirrors is nice touch. like the style. great for the winter snow and icy roads. nice handling and command of the road headlights and fog lights are great a lot of coverage. Just have money for gas cost.Mar 26, 2014

Great vehicle for anyone who lives out in the country and has issues in the winter months with un-plowed roads and ice. Gas mileage is awful (13-16) but overall is a great value Sport Utility Vehicle for the price.Feb 10, 2014

Over all i love this body style of explorer it is a great car to drive and i believe it was built well. It is reliable, roomy, and it is a go with the flow type of car. I work for a delivery service and at Christmas time i used it to deliver packages, it was amazing how much i could fit in it.Jun 11, 2013

Very solid SUV that has stood the test of time. I mostly use this vehicle for family travel and for hauling trash and yard clippings to the dump and the recycling area. Good Cargo area, solid build, you can really get down and get brown with this vehicle, then wash it down, and head out on the town and you will arrive in style.Mar 03, 2013

Great ride, tight steering, independent suspension w/little body roll, hauls good, great in snow & mud, comfortable, V-8 good power, great high & low 4x4 system, shift 4x4 on the fly, brakes are great even with a load behind you, solid feel on the road, smooth shifting even under load, good sight from drivers seat, seat adjust great with memory, seats fold up for hauling bigger items, in and out of it is nice better than my car. "Great Vehicle".Dec 24, 2012

Had this vehicle from new. No major problems until the faulty transmission design from ford failed and left me with a pile of useless parts. Loved this truck until it failed though. Lots of room and great ride. Avoid the years listed and you'll be fineNov 10, 2012

car served me well over the years, great on the road, handles well for a larger vehicle, no major repairs in the eight years that I have owned this truck, this is a much more versatile and durable than a mini-van or a crossover Apr 05, 2012

Overall the Explorer is a great SUV, however I strongly disagree with U-Haul's decision to ban the Ford Explorer from pulling it's rental trailers. The Mercury Mountaineer has the exact same chassis, wheel base etc, it's basically the exact same vehicle yet they don't ban the Mountaineer.Feb 05, 2012

Drive is nice, gas milage is a bit low but the auto 4WD plays that part and gets better in the summer months, lots of room with seating for 7. Breaking is good as well as the acceleration. Stereo system is good. Exterior styling is modern.Feb 08, 2011

Pretty much amazing. Lots of power, very good acceleration for a 2 ton SUV able to tow a huge trailer without any problem. 114K miles and still going strong Hasnt required any major repairs in the last 25K miles. Overall a great car to drive.Oct 15, 2010

Great car. This is my second explorer. My first was a 1995 EB Explorer. I decided to get this 2002 because I was in need of cargo space and reliability. This car has been a joy to drive over the last 8 years. Oct 05, 2010

Only dislike that my DVD player doesnt work, good running boards, big V8. Runs like a champ every time I start it. Gets about 14-16 MPG normally which is good for a big car. Got a trailer hitch and pretty good towing powerSep 26, 2010

its a beast....rolling with a 4.6L V8 , a custom tune, true dual exhaust and a cold air intake its like a big mustang. a little scary around corners at high speed but otherwise its awesome....more mods to come like underdrive pullies until i can afford a supercharger....and then after that possibly a 4.6L DOHC 32V....Aug 09, 2010

Performance- This SUV handles like most. its big, pretty top heavy, but its got a
4.0 liter engine and can reall ypick up speed if necesary. its handles quite
nicely, and braking is even better. half way down on the brake should easily
stop the car in about 1.5 seconds while doin 60-70
Build quality- since this is a used car that i have there are a couple of things
that i would like to get fixed, mainly in the sterio, but for a used car with around
120k miles on it there aren't alot of glaring problems with it. alittle bit of
squeaking here and there but for a used car this thing is still running strong.
Appearance- I love the look of this car. interior was designed quite nicely,
leather interior on the seats, alot of trunk space and fold away seats. can
comfortably seat 7, but this car is quite expensive. the exterior of the car is
quite modest. its a dark blue with gold skirts near the middle of the car. grill has
the standard explorer grill, rims are just stock as well. the whole car looks
awesome and im proud to show it off in the high school parking lot. haha
cost of ownership- this thing drinks gas like grad student drinks booze. it is not
good at all for gas mileage. if i had to guess id say it gets around 15 to 16 MPG
and gas money is always taking out huge chunks of my paychecks. so far
maintenance has been good. no major problems with it. this car is great but the
gas mileage will come back to kill you in the end.
Fun Factor- I think this car is fun to drive. its great to just cruise around town,
just having a good time with your buddies in the back. i also like how the
explorer is higher off the ground than most of the other cars. i love this car,
but i could see how for other people not in my situation how it could be my of a
burden than a blessing. Jun 07, 2010

Goes through the snow like hot knife through butter even without the 4-wheel drive!! This is my second Explorer, and I bought it on the reputation of the first one, which, with 210,000 miles, is still going strong! (I still own the first one, a '92, and will keep it until it begs for mercy.)
A few cons - the soft plug is very expensive to replace on the 4.0 liter engine. It looks like an 89-cent part, but due to its location, cost $270 in labor charges to get to it. I'm not happy with the cloth interior as everything sticks to it like velcro. And the posts between the rear side windows and back window are getting dull, a problem that has been happening since 1992 apparently.
I will most likely always drive an Explorer. They're roomy, comfortable, dependable and easy for everyone to get in and out of.Feb 18, 2010

This is my dad's vehicle. When I've driven it I have been more than satisfied with performance and comfort. Although without an 8 cylinder it does not have the giddy up that my Expedition has. It has one of the worst rollover ratings of any model, but it has never felt unstable on turns or ramps even when when going above the recommended speed for an off-ramp. Overall a great vehicle.Oct 05, 2009

I love my truck. It has almost everything in it that I wanted, except a sunroof.
It has leather heated seats, 3rd row seating, running board, power everything. I love driving it, it is so comfortable and handles great. Will have this vehicle for a long time.Sep 01, 2009

good family car, needs more power, good handling on the road, ugly shape the new shape it looks muc better, it has 4.0 V6 engine with 210 BHP which compare to the body weight it is too low, at the end it is good for family, and it is cheap to own and maintainJul 16, 2009

I love almost everything about my car. I live in Michigan and the winters are harsh, but that is no challenge for my Explorer. I have not had to replace anything other than brakes in the time i have had it, it get an oil change every 3K miles and not an issue. Now with the gas prices having dropped I put $25.00 in it a week and am good to go. I love to drive my car, it is comfortable, and cute! I have the side bars on it which I think enhance the functionality of it. I would definitely recommend Explorers to my friends and I have. Thanks to me my boyfriend is also looking for one. I've had my Explorer for 3 years now and I love it! It's very comfortable and would recommend this to anyone who wants an SUV. The only downfall is the gas mileage. But I can deal with it! It's been great with moving and hauling things or people to wherever!Aug 13, 2008

It's been a great family ride. It has very easily accessible "LATCH" system for child restraints. I really enjoy the rear-air feature, Towing capacity, storage abilities, 3rd row seat, child-safety features (ie. window locks, rear door child locks), and overall look of the truck. I would prefer a larger windshield. Sometimes I have to bend my head down a little to see the stop light at an intersection. It has great 4x4 handling, as well. I was recently left stranded on the side of I-95 in Florida when my Harmonic Balancer and Ignition Sensor went out. The FORD repair manual calls for the incorrect sized belt. It's very confusing for car-repair shops to repair your vehicle if the manufacturer's book is incorrect. I went thru 4 belts before we figured out the problem was Ford's recommendation of belt size... Jul 08, 2008

A very large car, with many large blind spaces. Can fit an entire car in the side blind spots.
Wide turning radius. But has 4x4, lots of storage space, and sturdy build. Less inclined to flip then the 90s models. Apr 12, 2008

The Explorer is a midsized SUV, that’s extremely reliable as well as very stylish. The Explorer is a No frills reliable truck, that get’s decent high way mileage. Some of the newer models step up the options available, but this truck really shines without those extra gadgets.Jan 27, 2008

I have no problems with the Explorer. It's a comfortable ride and provides plenty of room without making the vehicle seem 'too big'. Seven seats and even the rear ones provide leg room, enough for an adult.Apr 24, 2007
