great Engine Superb ride and handling no body roll drives like no other car; only issue are the costly labor repairs and oil leaks but once repaired can last you 300+ miles I still have mine . have owned it 18 years (2003)Oct 12, 2020

I liked the look, mileage and brand when I first saw the car. The dealer was willing to negotiate on the price, which made it more affordable. It was also clean and available for collection. This car is a lot of fun to drive, and feels very safe.May 21, 2015

Parking sensors are a big plus as is the privacy glass and roller sun shades. The huge glass moonroof is a really nice feature and it takes up less space in my garage than my E500 Mercedes. The tow package is great.May 04, 2015

I leased a brand new 2010 Mercedes ML350 before this X5. The E53 (X5) as is the technical term- outpowers its German counterpart. The ML didn't feel tough and infact it was like a puffy and sluggish sedan for soccer moms in the OC. The 4.4i Sport package handling is excellent on the freeway, curves, and going up hill. The set back is it is very bouncy going over speed bumps and potholes. It's not the best daily driver, but then again this is a second car. It's an excellent value as a used car because for the price I bought it, you can't easily find a car that's got what this has. Brand new this car cost close to $62k after options and taxes. I paid $8k. That's alot of car for the price. By comparison the 2007-2012 X5 became too tame and lost their urban attitude in favor of a very rounded SUV that look more like a wagon.Feb 07, 2015

Overall a great car to drive. Very responsive feel regarding handling, braking and maneuvering. Random issues with electronics operating sporadically. The build of the car is solid, high quality parts and feel to the components throughout the vehicle. Could be a little easier on the pocket book with regards to maintenance and repair - but well worth the expense as the driving experience is 2nd to none.

The X5 has met all expectations. Even gas mileage - I average 21 mpg combined city/hwy. Comfortable, safe, and cool looking. Plenty of power with the 3.0. The free maintenance is great. No charge for the first 50K miles.
great looking car. lots of options, ...German technology, all wheels drive. smooth ride. good gas millage. Oct 25, 2014

There is nothing like a BMW for having that feel that you are in control of the road. Solid construction and incredible handling. A 120,000 mile car still feels like it has 20,000 miles and many more miles to go.Apr 29, 2014

I love the power that the 4.4 liter V8 has to offer. The seats are very comfortable. The heated seats are great in the winter. There is plenty of room for the family. It has plenty of cargo room for shopping or vacation.Jan 13, 2014

I don't like fact that BMW put battery in back (although it is efficient, stinks if have to get to it). I also don't like fact BMW on all post 2000 cars cheapened out on window parts and as a result the window regulators have to constantly be replaced on all models. Aug 18, 2012

This 2006 X5 4.4i is an amazing sports activity vehicle. Smooth,
comfortable, a joy to drive. Phenomenal acceleration for its size and
weight, and I have averaged in mixed driving 20.1 mpg. I hate to sell it,
because this car is fabulous in all respects.Jan 29, 2011

Rainstorms? Tight turns? Rough terrain? The X5 Sports Activity Vehicle is ready for any journey. And with seating for seven, it's as versatile inside as it is outside. Beautiful inside and out. A luxury crossover with an all wheel drive. Great handling in snow...

Pros: The heated steering wheel is amazing in the winter even when you have gloves on. The panoramic sunroof is a great addition as well. It brings in so much more light into the vehicle, and the rear passengers can enjoy the sunroof too. I like how the Hockey Edition package included the Executive Package as well. The xenon headlights swivel and come to level when you first start-up the vehicle. The 3.0 L I6 engine is very powerful for being the smallest one offered for the X5 range (I've often found myself braking to slow down because I didn't realize how fast I was going). BMW's 4 year/80,000 km worry-free maintenance is heaven-sent. Everytime the BMW had to get something checked up or fixed, it was free. Since this BMW is based on the 5-series sedan platform, it drives like a much more refined sedan than SUV. There is minimal body-lean in cornering which is great for an SUV.
Cons: The interior dashboard and console come straight from the previous 5-series generation. The current generation 5-series includes iDrive with a revamped interior, so I wonder why that interior didn't carry over until the 2nd generation X5 (2007 - present). That interior looks outdated, in fact. The "premium" sound system didn't sound so premium, but it was pretty good.
Overall, this SUV is segment-leading. I only wish the plans for the X7 went through, because this SUV is only a mid-size. I would really much prefer a full-size SUV, but you do really get a lot of "sport-car" in this one.Apr 29, 2010

strong, excellent build, powerful engine and perfect
track control. There is absolutely no shortage of
power
in any RPM range, it could do with more interior
space,
overall an excellent car to own with minor flaws.
Strongly recommend it. Avoid buying pre 2003
Models.Sep 22, 2009

A nicely aging all-around SAV. Great high performance utility vehicle - fun to drive, quality built and very versatile daily driver. No issues whatsoever outside of the normal wear and tear. Cost of ownership is moderate relative to its intended use and design.Sep 11, 2009

comfy, drives like a dream, perfect for long roads because it flies too. handles really well for an SUV, the Xdrive is very helpfupl in any weather, even though the suspension could have been a bit tighter for better handling at higher speeds.Sep 09, 2009

Incredible handling and acceleration, especially considering this is a 2.5 ton vehicle! A little thirsty and requires premium fuel, but this is an absolute PLEASURE to drive. Long road trip in an X5? No problem! Little Rock to Cleveland was a smooth enjoyable trip. Maintenance can be costly, but it IS a BMW. Gas mileage isn't the greatest... I average about 19mpg in the city and 26mpg on the highway. Great comfortable vehicle. I love it.Jul 31, 2009

Performance is great. Build quality is also great. It's a gorgeous car. It consumes a lot of gas. It can give a regular cost for luxury cars. It's a fun car to drive. Overall this car is the ultimate driving machine.May 05, 2009

Probably one of the most comfortable car I have ever owned with the toughness of an SAV. No rattles or squeaks, no major repairs of any kind. It handles great and it is fun to drive. When I wash it, it looks brand new.Jan 25, 2009

It's the 3.0 Diesel and it's great in torque, performance and fuel economical...handling is great too and still looks good after all these year having owned it from new till today. no regrets and it's a definite must have is you are ever shopping for a SUV that built tough, looks that still hold and keep and performance with the fuel economy...diesel's way to go.Jan 14, 2009

My car is eight years old and has over 140,000
miles and it still has great breaks, handling and
acceleration, My car has had had minor repairs. It
sometimes rattles but I have gotten used to the
noise. The appearance is great, although I like the
look of the newer X5's. The interior is great, nice
leather seats with a pretty wood trim. Gas is
expensive, but that comes with the territory it is an
SUV. Maintenance can be expensive, for repairs,
and tires are expensive. The car is very fun to drive,
and I would recommend it to others. Dec 16, 2008

Good handling, quick, strong and sexy.
My Girl loves it. She drives it all the time. She doesn't let me drive anymore. But in driver or in passenger seat, I must say, this car is a real eye catcher.
I recommend this SUV to anyone and everyone that likes BMW and wants to own a 4X4!Sep 11, 2008

Great attempt by BMW to create their first SUV, or SAV in their language. Flawless performance, least body-roll in its class, great throttle response, superb brakes.
Some gremlins do appear in this car, but considering it's built in the US, then it's not that surprising, really.. Be sure that this car lives in the correct climate, or more gremlins could chew your wallet away.

Performance is acceptable with the 3.0dA with 220hp/500Nm. It is a big
car, but the 500Nm the engine produces makes it feel quick enough when
accelerating. It is very sports-car-like to drive, I like it very much.Dec 22, 2007
