I now have a 1926 Model T. There is little comparison, except in the negative. For the Price difference then, there was a hell of difference. You paid $295 for Model T and $4000 for a Rolls Royce. Today those prices would be comparable. BUT the difference between a Phantom of today and a Fusion of today is only in the assembly. The quality back then was demonstratably different. 4 wheel servo operated brakes on the RR to stop a 5000 lb car quickly and efficently. The single band in the T transmission meant you had to leave twice the 1 car length for 10 mph to be safe. Max speed for a T, 45mph but with tremendous noise and vibrations. RR was over 70mph, smooth and quiet. Suspension on the T two tranverse leaf springs front and rear; with tremendous body roll. The Ghost had 4 Leaf springs either side, front and rear and a smooth ride with little body roll. The transmission in the Ghost was 4 forward and a reverse. The T, two speed. RR could idle at 250rpm; you could slip the clutch in 4th until the car was going about 3mph and then let it out all the way and the engines torque would pickup and follow. 2nd in the T is too high to even try that.Jun 17, 2010
